Determining Subject Matter
I worked with the CT to identify the topic that would be appropriate for this assignment. After reviewing the upcoming lessons and considering the timeline, we agreed that I would teach the students about coordinate planes, including the parts of the plane, how to plot points, find the distance between points, and reflect points across axes. The timing of this topic is fitting since the students just completed a unit on number lines, integers, and rational numbers.
State, District, and National Standards Met
The two AZ College and Career Readiness Standards, found on the Arizona Department of Education (ADE) website, that will be taught during this topic are:
6.NS.C.6. Understand a rational number as a point on the number line. Extend number line diagrams and coordinate axes familiar from previous grades to represent points on the line and in the plane with negative number coordinates.
b. Understand signs of numbers in ordered pairs as indicating locations in quadrants of the coordinate plane; recognize that when two ordered pairs differ only by signs, the locations of the points are related by reflections across one or both axes.
c. Find and position integers and other rational numbers on a horizontal or vertical number line diagram; find and position pairs of integers and other rational

The school’s program, Eureka Math, provides learning objectives for each lesson, but they are not very student-friendly. So I worked with my CT to rewrite them so the students could clearly understand the focus of the lesson and take some responsibility for their

Part B: During the children’s early years, they learn that mathematics helps people making sense of their environments through play, investigations, real-life situations, and focused learning experiences. Children come to school with different experiences about mathematics (Anghileri, 2006; Yelland, Butler, & Diezmann, 1999). Many children enjoy singing number names, identifying how big objects and people are, labelling shapes, and using their developing mathematical understandings to think and reason (Reys, Lindquist, Lambdin, Smith, Rogers, Falle, Frid, & Bennett, 2012; Australian Association of Mathematics Teachers, 1997). In the education system there is a framework describing the children’s mathematical development and expected levels…

Part B Diagnostic Interview and Tutoring Sessions Permission was granted (Appendix A) to interview and tutor Athena*, who is a 9 year old student in Year 4 who returned to Australia in the middle of Year 3, after living in the United States for 5 years. The Mathematics Assessment Interview (MAI) was conducted on a weekend afternoon at Athena’s home shortly after lunch (Australian Catholic University, 2011b). She did not seem to be nervous and was informed that the purpose of the questions was to help a pre-service teacher learn and develop some effective ways of teaching through the follow up tutoring sessions. Athena began the MAI confidently and could read, write (on the calculator) and order two digit numbers with ease.…

I live in a world of crazy numbers and fancy acronyms, the world of sabermetrics. Originally defined by Bill James in 1980, sabermetrics is "the search for objective knowledge about baseball", yet the term has grown into much, much more. Sabermetrics give ordinary people like me, the tools to predict the future, to forecast the worth of a human being with a couple of intricate formulas and a pinch of extrapolation. It appeared to be magic when I first learned about the masses of statistics associated with baseball. I was seven years old when my father started introducing me to his boxes upon boxes of old baseball cards.…

Whilst observing at Agnew Middle School, I noticed some ways that Mrs.Lane motivated her students. It was almost guaranteed that there would be a test every week, and if not a test there would be an assignment added on Think Through Math. She would assign work on Think Through Math weekly, because if a student failed the Math STAAR (a Texas state standardized test required by the Texas public schools) in seventh grade and did work on Think Through Math weekly leading up to the eighth grade STAAR a higher percentage passed. Neighboring on the tests and homework assigned, Mrs.Lane also motivated her students by giving them opportunities to do test corrections and putting the limit of wrong answers on Think Through Math to seven. She made the…

Chinenyenwa Amaechi Dahiya AP Calculus 16 October 2015 Every student who has ever asked an older adult for help with their math homework is very familiar with the phrase “This is not the type of math I did growing up”. The mathematics we have today greatly differs from that of earlier generations and time periods due to the dynamic nature of this field of study. Throughout history, many important individuals have contributed to the field of mathematics and have helped develop the theories, postulates and mathematical rules which are widely accepted today. From the quadratic formula to the trigonometric functions, these people have revolutionized the way we view mathematics in unimaginable ways.…

In this project I will talk about curves in three space, also known as curves in three dimensional space or 3 - D. Many of us are familiar with two dimensional space or 2- D. It is called two dimension space because it has two axes: the x-axes and the y-axes. Three dimensional space is represented by the symbol it is called three dimensional space because three axes are used to draw, and the three axes are: x, y, and z. Figure 01: Standard axes of 3 dimensions This is the standard axes of three dimensional or…

Fractions Understanding a half When students begin learning about fractions, it is imperative that the educator starts by assessing the students understanding of what a half is. Based on the Australian Curriculum this often takes place in the Year One descriptor (ACMNA016), where it identifies that students are able to half an item and identify how it is an equal portion. Developing a understanding into how to halve an object so both parts are equal, play a vital role in understanding how fraction work, this is based on a half being the largest fraction before making a whole. A child can demonstrate a understanding by folding a piece of paper over onto itself to make half, but then also go on to describe that they are equal as they are equal…

Before starting to learn ‘Congruent Triangles’, students will have to know all the basic angle properties of straight lines, triangles, quadrilaterals and parallel lines. Students would have learnt this before in previous stages of schooling, especially in stage 4. However, all the students cannot be expected to know this, due to either the fact that they haven’t learnt it before (due to a range of factors such as missing schooling, student migrating from other countries etc.) or that they have forgotten. Therefore, before starting to teach ‘congruent triangles’, the teacher will need to activate and consolidate key vocabulary and techniques associated to these angles. Since the students will be expected to already know this vocabulary, there…

Math is about numbers; these numbers span from positive to negative, rational to irrational and complex to imaginary. The main number that this essay will be looking at is the irrational number known as pi. Many different civilizations throughout history have had their own approximations for pi. In fact one of the first aspects in defining the number known as pi was coming up with a variable that could represent this number. Π was decided to be the variable that stuck and its origins can be traced back to the Greeks (Wilson).…
