Research Question:
What is the empirical formula for the compound made when Mg(s) is heated in air?

Background: (Maximum length 1 page including chemicals equations)

The hypothesis of this experiment is that empirical formula is going to be close to a ratio as 1:1, because that is the theoretical empirical formula for the compound magnesium oxide. Empirical formula is simplest formula for a compound, it is the smallest possible whole- number ratio of subscripts of the elements in the formula. Generally, this the same thing as its simplest molecular formula, this is generally the actual number

Once cooled, remove the crucible using tongs and record the mass of the crucible and lid to ± 0.001 g. Do not use your hands to handle the crucible from this point onwards or you will have to fire it again from step 1.
4. Obtain a 0.30 ± 0.01 g magnesium strip (do not handle with your hands). Fold the strip using tongs to fit in the bottom of the crucible.
5. Record the mass of the magnesium strip, crucible and lid to ± 0.001 g.
6. Place the crucible on the clay triangle. Set the lid slightly off-center to allow air to enter but prevent product from escaping.
7. Place the Bunsen burner under the crucible, light it, and brush the bottom of the crucible with a gentle flame for 1 minute; then place the Bunsen burner under the crucible and heat strongly.
8. Heat until all the magnesium turns into a grey-white powder (probably around 10 minutes).
9. Stop heating and allow the crucible, lid and contents to cool.
10. Add about 1 cm3 (~10 drops) of deionized water directly to the solid powder. Carefully waft some of the gas that is generated toward your nose, but be very careful. Record any qualitative results.
Also, use tongs to carefully hold a piece of damp pH paper over the crucible. Record any qualitative

How would factors such as:
a. It alters the data that is found in the experiment, what is meant by alter the data is that at the end when the product is weighed we wouldn’t get an accurate result because instead of finding the weight of the oxygen like the question we will be finding the weight of nitride. Meaning that the lab was not done according to the things that are being said. Also instead of finding the weight of one magnesium you will be getting the weight of 3 magnesium atoms
b. This would again alter our data because here instead of finding the weight of only the elements of magnesium and oxygen, we are also finding the weight of hydrogen and adding it to the empirical formula findings. Which is not asked of us. Also we would be finding not only the weight of one hydroxide atom, but 2 because it has bonded with

Introduction The goal of this experiment was to determine atomic weight of Kandimonium and the relative number of M&M’s in Kandimonium. Kandimonim is composed of three isotopes: Skittles, M&M’s, and Sweet Tarts, and the ratio of Sweet Tarts to Skittles is 27:18. The relative number of M&M’s and the atomic mass were determined by weighing each of the different Isotopes and calculating their average masses for further calculations.…

At beginning, two consecutive blank (empty alumina crucible) experiments were done to get rid of any water absorbed by alumina crucible and establish a stable baseline at 700 0C at the rate of 10K/min by placing the empty crucible on the sample pen (Figure not shown). Then third blank (empty crucible) experiment was done with the same crucible to establish a stable baseline at 300 0C at the rate of 3K/min (Figure 5A) and clear baseline was obtained for weight loss (Black line). Then (4th curve), the empty crucible was weighed and transferred and filled it with the desired air dry MnO2 powder (14.20 milligram). The filled crucible was placed back into the machine in the original position, and closed the cover and the experiment was studied under…

To find the moles of Magnesium, dimensional was used to multiply the molar mass of Magnesium to its measured mass, the final result is 5.3475936 x 10-3 moles. 0.13g Mg×(1mol/(24.31g))=5.3475936×〖10〗^(-3) After adding Hydrochloric acid and been heated on the hot plate, the total mass of evaporating dish plus Magnesium Chloride is 44.96 grams. By subtracting the mass of Magnesium ribbon 0.13 grams from the total mass 44.96 grams, the mass of Magnesium Chloride was found to be 0.56 grams. 44.96-44.40=0.56g After knowing the mas of Magnesium chloride, by subtracting the mass of Magnesium ribbon from it, the mass of Chloride was found to be 0.43…

Then we took the initial temperature of the water in the calorimeter and made sure to record the temperature in Celsius in our lab notebooks. Our next step was to measure out 1 gram of Magnesium Sulfate (MgSO4) using the electronic balance. We then added the compound into the water inside the calorimeter along with a magnetic stirrer pill. We placed the calorimeter on the stir plate and allowed it to stir the compound for one minute on level 5. After one minute we turned off the…
