Music has always been perceived incorrectly. People think it’s just instruments repeating the same chord progression over and over again with a vocalist overlaying the instruments. Making a solid, good sounding track takes much more work and effort than that. Behind the sound and design of the song is a producer. The producer mixes and shapes the audio to make the song sound as clean as possible. By tweaking volumes, filters, EQing, side chaining, etc, a producer is able to make the track flow better and sound crisper. I chose this topic because I have already started producing my own songs and I want to learn more about it and possibly pursue it in the future. Creating a masterpiece of music involves dedication, effort, and time. Although, it is difficult, digital music production comes with its advantages over analog production. In “Desktop recording studio: with the right software and a few plug-in instruments, anyone (really, anyone) can be a rock star in his own home”, it is stated that “Computers have simplified this process immensely. New Track is one of the easier-to-find menu items in most programs--so building a song is like layering ingredients on a sandwich. I started with a percussion line, then added a bass line on a separate track, then another for rhythm instruments, another track for piano, and vocals and so on.” (para. 8). I have been producing music for a couple of years and I can say that this is somewhat true. There is a lot of time and commitment needed for making sure your song is perfect, but with the help of digital plug-ins and programs, it makes the process much easier compared to producing with analog equipment. That being said, the pains of producing music are time and motivation. Completing a song could take months of hard work and sometimes because of how much work it takes, there is a lack of motivation to finish the project. I interviewed an electronic producer named “Ether” and when I asked him what the challenges and struggles are of producing, he said that his main issue is writer’s block.
