Characterization is the act of or an instance of characterizing. A description of qualities or peculiarities, representation of a character(s) on the stage or in writing especially by imitating or describing actions,etc. (www.thefreedictionary.com/characterization). There are two types which are direct and indirect. In the short story of “Desiree’s Baby” written by Kate Chopin, characterization is used to describe Madame Valmonde, Desiree, and Armand. Characterization is the act or an instance of characterizing, a description of qualities or peculiarities; a list of places of interest, with brief characterization of each. (www.freedictionary.com) There are two types of characterization that can be used, which consist of direct characterization and indirect characterization. Direct characterization is how a writer tells their reader about the characters. This occurs when the writer specifically describes the characters. Direct is also important in showing the character's motivation, which is describing how that person feels in a specific way so the reader can right away figure out how that …show more content…
Far along, some of the problems of the short story have to do with Armand’s pride especially his family's last name. However, Desiree did love Armand and she felt that Armand felt as she did, but she soon realized she was wrong. Armand showed that the only thing he really did care about was showing off his family, and having lots of power. This problem can be resolved by Armand realizing that a family’s last name will not get you anywhere. Nothing makes someone whom they are or nothing chooses what they are but them. Someone can be really stubborn and just care about themselves just like Armand showed in the short story. Just like in the story the only place it will get you is nowhere or alone.
