Designer Baby Essay

Scientific technology today has made many advancements. Humans have more at their fingertips than ever before, including the option to design their own baby. A common technique for doing so is known as in vitro fertilization. This technique involves combining the sperm and eggs into a petri dish and then inserting the fertilized eggs into the female’s uterus. Other methods include injecting specific sperm directly into the fallopian tubes, this sperm can be provided by either the parents themselves or donors.
A big debate that comes into question with creating designer baby’s is whether or not it’s ethical. Some argue that the creation of one’s baby is a method of eugenics. Eugenics is to seek out to shape one’s own population by allowing only

If able, I feel more people will be designing their babies. In today’s society there seems to be an overwhelming obsession with perfection. Not only with ourselves but with our children or unborn children. Some parents want the star athlete, others strive for the musical prodigy, the A+ student who joins all the extraocular activities. In my opinion when parents don’t feel their child is living up to their standards of perfection they will force the perfection to happen making for an unhappy child and over bearing parent. So, if you have the ability to create your perfect child and the technology to give them the most desirable attributes, would you? If a doctor tells you that your child will be much shorter than the average child, and will have difficulty throughout their life, if possible, would you change that attribute to make your child taller? If you have the ability to make your child’s life easier from infancy to adulthood, wouldn’t you want to?
I am not agreeing or disagreeing with the prospect of designer babies. Who am I to place judgment on someone if they want to design their own baby. If parents choose to design their baby based on looks and personality traits then I can’t really see the point. On the other hand, the thought of being able to genetically enhance your child for the better in regards to illness and health is a wonderful option to have

Gene therapy for example has some ethical issues of how they decide which cases gene therapy is acceptable and which is not, high costs may only make it available to the wealthy, and possibly make society less accepting of different people (What Is Gene Therapy). Another problem arises with this, where does it stop? While in some cases it may be very helpful to cure a disease, people may take advantage and start using this therapy to try to alter things like athleticism, intelligence, or other traits they may wish to change. Those ethical problems are also similar ones we are seeing today with the designer baby, especially the social gap.…

Could you imagine a world where we could create a better race of humans? I think that designer babies are an efficient way to create a better society where a smarter race of humans can rule, he world and we can make the world a better place. In the article “In Praise of Designer Babies” it says “Imagine you knew that you carried a gene for a debilitating illness. But doctors could go into your egg (or your spouse's) and remove that gene, enabling you to have a baby who, whatever other problems they might encounter through their lifetime, wouldn't have to worry about the illness.…

You may ask “what are designer babies?” Well, designer babies are when the parents of a baby can choose the phenotypes, also known as your traits, such as eye color, height, hair color, and many more. Although having to pick your own baby’s trait would be nice, there are indeed some ethical and moral issues when doing so. One obvious problem is the cost, the practice is not going to be cheap. As a result, not everyone is going to afford this cost which can lead to a society gap, where designer babies will be smarter and better than ordinary babies.…

With the completion of the Human Genome Project in 2003, we were given the ability to identify every gene that forms the building blocks of a human being. Researchers are attempting to use these blueprints to make perfect children with the screening of embryos before they are implanted into the mother’s uterus; a procedure called Pre-Implantation Genetic Diagnosis. This screening shows the presence of any genetic defect, including traits not related to the embryos health. Today screenings are being used to identify genetic defects that prevent women from having healthy children, however lately individuals are interested in using this screening to manufacture a child that will be born with what they would consider the superior genes. Although people are in favor of using the screenings to identify the genetic defects, according to a paper published in June 2006 by Kathy L. Hudson of the Genetic and Public Policy Center, 72% disapprove of the Pre-Implantation Genetic Diagnosis that’s used to create designer babies.…

In this paper, I will be covering the upbringing research of genetically modifying babies, more commonly known as designer babies, and the ethicality of its introduction to society. Research on designer babies in recent years has led to bright new ideas that inch it closer to reality showing how we are taking advantage of technology in medicine and the constant lookout for ridding of human error and boosting precision. According to an article in Obstetrics, Gynaecology, and Reproductive Medicine, Ronald T.K. Pang and P.C. Ho, both respected professors at the University of Hong Kong and a part of the Shenzhen Key Laboratory of Fertility Regulation, discuss into depth of two different methodologies, accountable risks, and an…

Designer Babies Imagine a society where kids grew up in a defect-free environment. Even if the technology that would create this seems distant, geneticists are actively researching it and there’s even a term for children that could be genetically modified. They’re called designer babies and could revolutionize the effects impairments have on our society. However, this new project could also have a negative effect on our society as well, such as the unsure success rate of the procedure. The use of this technology is a double edged sword, but I believe it could help create a more nourishing environment for youth for every child to thrive.…

Designer babies can almost be compared to robots. They are all designed to do and perform the same way and this may be the result in designing children. This will affect biodiversity and affect the child’s freedom because the child will never have the chance to be their own individual. “Moreover, the diversity of the gene pool and human genetics will be affected, and this may even lead to a major percentage of the human race being wiped out completely by some major disease” (Buzzle.com, 2011, Designer para. 6).…

Parents can now decide, with a lot of money in their hands, the way their baby is going to look. However, many scientists believe that these advancements are just the beginning and that within a decade it can be possible to select for a broad range of traits from physical attributes to personality type. Jeremy Rifkin, a biotech critic states that: “It’s the ultimate shopping experience: designing your baby” (Lemonick, 1999, p. 3.) The next generations are going to be filled with these babies that are born perfectly normal, not because they were lucky, but because their parents saved all their money to create him/her.…

Q2. Do parents show a morally problematic attitude to their children if they genetically enhance them? The word ‘designer baby’ refers to an infant whose genetic traits are artificially modified to assure presence or absence of a particular characteristic (Sandel, 2004).
