Scientific technology today has made many advancements. Humans have more at their fingertips than ever before, including the option to design their own baby. A common technique for doing so is known as in vitro fertilization. This technique involves combining the sperm and eggs into a petri dish and then inserting the fertilized eggs into the female’s uterus. Other methods include injecting specific sperm directly into the fallopian tubes, this sperm can be provided by either the parents themselves or donors.

If able, I feel more people will be designing their babies. In today’s society there seems to be an overwhelming obsession with perfection. Not only with ourselves but with our children or unborn children. Some parents want the star athlete, others strive for the musical prodigy, the A+ student who joins all the extraocular activities. In my opinion when parents don’t feel their child is living up to their standards of perfection they will force the perfection to happen making for an unhappy child and over bearing parent. So, if you have the ability to create your perfect child and the technology to give them the most desirable attributes, would you? If a doctor tells you that your child will be much shorter than the average child, and will have difficulty throughout their life, if possible, would you change that attribute to make your child taller? If you have the ability to make your child’s life easier from infancy to adulthood, wouldn’t you want to?
I am not agreeing or disagreeing with the prospect of designer babies. Who am I to place judgment on someone if they want to design their own baby. If parents choose to design their baby based on looks and personality traits then I can’t really see the point. On the other hand, the thought of being able to genetically enhance your child for the better in regards to illness and health is a wonderful option to have
