He examines famous serials killers and professional theories, as well as studies concerning them and the general characteristic traits they possess. He states that serial killers are “frequently the products of broken or severely brutal homes, where they have themselves been subjected to gross cruelty, sexual abuse, and in some cases prolonged and systematic torture, in deprived childhood: negative parenting as the jargon has it. Vulgatim: the brutal father is the father to the brutal father.” (Egan 327). Anna Halgren Hoover - Sociology One of the age old questions that plague this earth is the thought that things like murder, corruption, and deviance are coded into the human genome, and that when these genes meet in certain frequencies, coupled with environmental and social factors, it leads to the creation of outliers. Or, in Joel Rifkin’s case, among others, to the birth of a serial killer. Three hundred eighty-five is the number of people killed in a mass shooting in 2016 according to the Gun Violence Archive which reflects the number of incidents reported and verified. Seven in a college town, five in an airport, and 49 in a nightclub the worst mass shooting in U.S. history. While the death tolls, places and memorial photos change there is one common characteristic; the weapon chosen. Though to be clear it is difficult to define what is considered a mass shooting and the numbers may reflect this gray area.
