Reflective Essay: My Sound Walk

Improved Essays
Every day I walk around ten to twelve thousand steps a day, but I never really stop and intentionally listen to what is going on around me. While I was doing my sound walk, I found some really good hiding spots for when I want to be alone. I did my sound walk on a Thursday around 1:30 in the afternoon. It was a very gloomy day, about 50 degrees Fahrenheit and very cloudy and rainy. The first stop I made was at the Student Recreation Center, which is circled in orange highlighter on the map. There is a bench right outside of the gym that is a little bit in the middle of nowhere and a little far off from the sidewalk. I decided to sit there on that Thursday afternoon. I was facing the Student Recreation Center and watching people walk through …show more content…
I went down the steps and sat underneath the covering on the side of the shorter wall near the door that reads, "EMPLOYEES ONLY". I sat there and sat my stuff on the ground and closed my eyes as I faced the steps I just walked down. When I closed my eyes, I heard a very faint noise and the distance that sounded like one of the shuttles slamming on their brakes and stopping abruptly. Another thing I heard as I sat at stop number three was a guy throwing his skateboard down the on the ground and starting to ride his skateboard away from the library, towards my next stop. One very odd thing I heard was someone's water bottle half full of water in the side pocket of their backpack was swaying back and forth and the water was smacking against the sides of the water and making a lot of noise. As I got up to head to stop number four, I realized that the rain had picked up and I could hear the rain hitting my rain jacket as I walked away from the library and out from under the …show more content…
Stop number four was East Hall which is circled in green pen on the map. I recommend sitting under the opening which is the part of East Hall that is closest to the library and has two benches to sit in. I sat on the bench furthest away from the library and faced towards the door that leads into the stairwell. I closed my eyes and listened, as I listened I heard a faint noise in the distance that reminded me of waves and completely relaxed me. I remember I quickly jumped as someone walked down the stairwell and opened the heavy door, as they were leaving they were dragging a backpack on wheels which was extremely loud. I also heard a a person on their bike ring their bell on their bike and heard their tires shake as they rode through the covering of East Hall where I was sitting. As I began to stand up and walk back home, I heard water hitting the ground. I thought this was weird since I was underneath a covering but then realized there was a leak and the water was leaking and hitting the

Wait! Please do not do this I can explain Pow! Just like that my life flashed before my eyes,I could feel the sharp pain of the 9mm bullet shred my skin like it was nothing,I screamed out words that would not of been polite to anyone's ears. I could feel the traumatizing beat of my heart pounding the back of my head, the ringing inside my ears seemed to ward out any sound that my ears seemed to pick up on any other normal day. The only thing i could hear was the faint screams of the sirens on top of the law enforcement vehicles.…

Hi Ms. Pierce, Hope you had a wonderful break and a nice day, The word I would use to describe my break is deciphering because I got a break from dance and school. For example, I was able to sleep to try to avenge the early wakings during school days and early dance practices. In addition to that, I had nothing to be concerned about. Having a break from both school and dance gave me time to think about myself and what I wanted for my future; besides, I was able to unwind. The time I had was crucial to me because sometimes in the middle of all the activities in the year I have no time to think.…

Ever since my first backpacking trip 6 years ago, I’ve had an affinity for the Appalachian Trail. I’m constantly looking for excuses to mash our lives into the giant, 50 liter bags, and hit the trail for a few days. This past year, in early fall, I convinced my parents to don their sturdy boots and disappear into the wilds of bear state park with me for three days. We were dropped off at the top of Bear Mountain and, while my parents argued over directions, I wandered around the windswept ridge.…

I thought that maybe it was my neighbors, since they are always working on things at all hours of the day and night. When I heard another loud noise, a short time later I decided to go back downstairs to see for myself what it could be. When I went downstairs, I noticed my Uncle Mike standing up looking through the window of the backdoor. He was staying with us that evening and was asleep on the couch when he heard the noise too. We sat there for several minutes staring out the windows,…

Before we began walking as a group we took a few minutes to discuss what we thought we would hear during the Soundwalk. We assumed that we would be hearing the buzzing of busy Toronto streets, lots of cars and people continuing on their daily routines in the midst of Chinatown. We anticipated music coming from stores, the occasional ringing of a telephone and possibly an emergency vehicle alarm, but we didn’t know if all of these elements would be heard during our walk. We do not feel that the sounds we were making changed throughout the walk.…

It was April 20th, 1999 when a slight breeze filled the sky, enjoying the cool winds I rocketed towards school. Arriving at school, I felt like a log flowing down a river stream, and then suddenly a loud "Bzzzzz" echoed down the halls. The hallways felt like a school of fish viciously running away from a predator hunting them down. In a matter of seconds, everything calmed down and the first period started. A sudden rumbling sound came out from my stomach, as I anxiously waited for the lunch bell to ring.…

    A. Autobiographical Statement My mother was the first and only person in her family to graduate from college, which has always been an inspiration to me. She was an abused wife on food stamps, raising two children on her own while my father was incarcerated. I will always remember when she told me that life was like a lotus flower; we may start by growing in the mud but each day we can choose to bloom above the water into a beautiful flower. It was then that I understood my childhood was not my choice, but how I choose to live the rest of my life was. My mother never wavered in her faith that if I wanted to do something in my life the only thing that could hold me back was myself.…

The concept of transition can be believed to be both confronting and transformative for the individual or groups involved. This idea is undoubtedly explored within Steven Daldry’s film, Billy Elliot with a central theme of maturity and Robert Gray’s poem, Late Ferry, as it expresses ideas about the transformative concept of transitions. Additionally, Meiert Avis’ music video for Paramore’s Brick by Boring Brick explores a confronting change to the protagonist as the music video demonstrates challenges of growing up. These texts go in depth into the challenging process of transitions and they thoroughly explore the transformation of individuals experiencing the journey into adulthood.…

Observations from the Firing Range I decided to take a friend and try out a firing range that had some extensive renovations completed recently. Previous visits were a disappointment, to say the least, but the new management had promised a new look and new experience. It was a quasi-private range that required membership and residency in the village to use. Residents could bring guests for an additional fee. Part of the property owners dues that residents paid to the village were used for the renovations and subsequent upkeep.…
