This paper sets out to examine the Manhattan Project. The paper will include a description of the Manhattan project and the reasons behind starting it. The paper analyses the reasons behind dropping the atomic bombs on Japan. It is seen that not only were the bombs dropped, to prevent loss of American lives, but also to further political interests.
Focusing on the physics behind the fission process, the forces working on the atomic nucleus and the nuclear binding energy is described. Based on this understanding it is ascertained that it is possible to gain energy by splitting a nucleus. It is possible to induce fission by bombarding heavy nuclei with neutrons. It is seen that it is possible to maintain a fission chain reaction through enrichment
