Describe the world you come from — for example, your family, community or school — and tell us how your world has shaped your dreams and aspirations.
Growing up in the inner city of San Diego for the early part of my childhood life was difficult. Facing the challenges of the stereotypical Latino family was a daily occurrence, such as parents not being able to support the family and also facing the fact I might never make it to college. As a Latino, you are always faced with difficult challenges such as people telling you that you will never graduate from high school, you'll join a gang or you won't obtain the same level of education that the upper class has easy access to. I had very little knowledge of the English language, and trying to keep up with the other kids was difficult. While in middle school, I realized the motivation I was waiting for to pursue my dreams would never come, I had to be my own motivation. I motivated myself to chase my dreams by taking time out of my day to attend tutoring, join AVID (Advanced Via Individual Determination), along with joining National Honors Society in order to help myself excel in school and reach my goals. I finished middle school and soon after, I had high school in my sights. When applying to high school, I had my sights set on one, high school and that was Health Sciences High. I desperately wanted to get in because I had heard they had amazing opportunities available for students like me who wanted to become doctors by giving their students the opportunity to internship at Sharp hospitals. When I first attended this high school, I was in complete shock as someone coming from a populated middle school to a relatively small school that only contains about 100 students per grade. I found this school to be very unique. It was classified as a public charter school, but the environment was

As high school progressed, so did my GPA and the rigor of the courses I was taking. I set aside what I could not control and focused on what I could. With the help of some incredible teachers, my passion for science blossomed and my drive to get good grades, take challenging courses, and explore my passion for science grew. It was an honest passion interest and love for learning, not something forced upon me by my parents or my school. I think for many high school students their schedule and classes become something that will make their parents happy or look good on college transcripts, but it is something so much more for me.…

Growing up I faced many obstacles coming from an immigrant family. Never did I think I could overcome the obstacles and say that the little girl who went to one of the worst rated elementary schools in the area was now a rising senior at George Mason University. I grew up with both my parents and three sisters, and in my eyes we were an average “normal” family. I never saw my parents struggle or felt like I was missing anything, and not until I was older did I understand our situation. I did not fully grasp that my parents were “different” because they were immigrants until I realized they could not help me with my homework, engage in a conversation with my teachers, nor participate in all the things my classmates parents did.…

My father couldn’t deal with all the harsh conditions that were affecting our family and wanted a better future for us.…

The importance of looking at Latino immigrants and their children is not only because they are one of fastest growing populations but also because of the special circumstances that revolve around this population. Latino immigrants (mostly unauthorized) have lower levels of education, are less likely to receive government assistance, are overrepresented in low paying manual jobs, and are more likely to be in poverty. When looking at unauthorized adult Latino immigrants (ages 25-64), 47% have less than a high school education, by contrast, only 8% of native born individuals (ages 25-64) have not graduated from high school (Passel and Cohn, 2009). Of the United States 2008 labor force of 154 million people, there was an estimated 8.3 million…

Both of my parents made the ultimate sacrifice for my future; they left behind the only life they knew in a relentless search for prosperity. They arrived with little more than the clothes on their backs and the willingness to work, a privilege they were not granted in their home countries. My whole life I grew up with the value that hard work is good; if someone came to this country to work hard, there was no fault in that. My belief was shared in my community, which was more than half Latino, this notion was strongly ingrained in myself and my peers. In the past decade, the United States has seen a surge of Latino immigrants as a whole.…

The thing that defines me in an essential way is the color of my skin, my ethnicity, and my heritage. Women with privilege who want a temporary bronzed summer glow covet my skin, yet for me, it is the first thing that everyone sees and what people use to stereotype me. As a Mexican-American woman in Southeast Texas, I often face different types of prejudice, stereotypes, and racism. As a young girl, it was rather difficult to feel comfortable with who I was, even though my ethnicity was something I could not control. The demonization of immigrants through the media has a huge effect on how my community sees me.…
