Describe The Physical Structure Of The Gulper Eel

The gulper eel is very different from other eels. The biggest difference is mainly in its’ physical structures. It’s physical structures help the eel survive. Something happens to male eels when they mature. They eat in a special way but deep sea predators eat them. They eat small creatures. They live deep in a dark environment. The eel has many categories it is uniquely adapted which, includes physical structures, reproduction and behavior, feeding habits, position in food web, range, and environment. The gulper eel is adapted to survive and thrive.

The gulper eel’s physical features are very interesting. It’s tail has pink bioluminescence, a light made from chemicals(S2). It can also flash red(S2). The eel is usually black or dark green

It is thought that female eels attract their mates by leaving a scent released by the females(S4).Females produce a lot of eggs(S4). When a male eel matures, their body undergoes a big change(S5). Their olfactory organs get enlarged and indicates they can locate their mates through pheromones left by female eels(S5). Females can produce a large amount of eggs(S4). It is believed that both eels die shortly after reproducing(S5). The gulper eel’s behavior is almost like a snake. It lurks around, snatching prey with its’ …show more content…
But it actually doesn’t.They have small teeth, so they actually eat small crustaceans and cephalopods(S5). Cephalopods are octopi or squid. They only eat larger fish if food is scarce(S2), and when it does eat larger fish, the stomach distends to fit larger fish(S2). When it eats, it opens its’ mouth wide and scoops up the prey and swallows the prey whole(S5). Then it slowly expels the water through its’ gill slits(S5). Their only known predator we know right now is the lancetfish(S5).But there are definitely other predators.

The gulper eel lives very deep below the surface(S6). It lives in a zone called the Midnight zone. It has little to no light. The eels live around 500-7,000 feet deep under the surface(S6), around tropical and temperate areas(S6). The temperature down there is about 1.43 C to 21.43 degrees C(S1).
