Dermatologist Biopsy

Today I shadowed a dermatologist. I was surprised at how many pts the dermatologist sees in a day. Most of the pts were elderly and in for a skin examination. The first pt came in for a bald spot that appeared to be scarring. After a thorough examination, the dermatologist also found a suspicious spot on the forehead that appeared to be a basal cell. The dermatologist ordered biopsy(MT1) for both spots. The biopsy on the forehead turned out to be a simple procedure. The dermatologist used a scalpel-like instrument to remove the part of the epidermis near the sore. The epidermis is the outermost layer of our skin and is tough and resilient. It provides a waterproof barrier and creates our skin tone(AP). During the biopsy, a cover with a hole

In your own words, explain why the stratum corneum is so important when discussing dermal absorption? The Stratum Corneum is the outermost layer of the epidermis and it is made up of stratified squamous epithelium with no blood vessels. As the cells of the epidermis divides and age, the older epidermal cells are pushed away from the dermis to the epidermis towards its outer surface (stratum corneum). It would be right to describe the stratified squamous cells of the stratum corneum as many layers of thin, flat, tightly packed dead/keratinized cells which will eventually shed off.…

One such biopsy is an excisional or incisional biopsy, where a surgeon cuts through the skin to remove the whole tumor, or a piece of the tumor. Another type of biopsy is a Fine needle aspiration (FNA) or core needle biopsy. During an FNA, a syringe attached to a hollow needle is poked through the skin to collect a sample of the tumor. A core needle biopsy has a slightly larger needle to retrieve a larger piece of the tumor for biopsy purposes (Shankland, 2012, 852).
