Depression, also known as depressive disorder, is a syndrome that reflects a sad and/or grouchy mood.
Depression can affect someone's mood, cause them to feel drained, and cause someone to feel down for weeks, months, or even longer. Depression can have a remarkable impact on a person's life. This can result in many negative consequences such as pain and physical illness, anxiety, panic disorder or social phobia, alcohol or substance misuse, family conflicts, relationship difficulties, and work or school problems. The three most common types of depression are major depression, dysthymia, and bipolar disorder.

Overall, between 20% and 25% of adults may suffer from major depression. Major depression also affects older adults, teens, and children but frequently goes untreated. There is no sure way to prevent depression. However, there are a few strategies that can help, such as; reaching out to family and friends, getting treatment at the earliest sign of a problem, and considering getting a long term maintenance treatment.
Dysthymia
Dysthymia, also known as persistent depressive disorder,is a continuous long-term form of depression.
Symptoms include losing interests in normal daily activities, feeling hopeless, and having low self esteem. These feelings may last up to years. Dysthymia often begins early in childhood, the teen years, or young adult life. Dysthymia is not a condition that you can treat on your own, but in addition to professional treatment, there are self care treatments like reaching out to family and friends, getting treatment at the earliest sign of a problem, and considering getting long-term maintenance treatmemts.
