From the time I entered college, I was set on pursuing a career in the health sciences. After a close cousin of mine completed dental school and embarked upon her residency, I decided to join the pre-dental club at my alma matter, New York University. Upon attending a series of lectures and events at both NYU College of Dentistry and Columbia University College of Dental Medicine, I was inspired by dentists’ unique ability to improve one’s confidence and quality of life. I went on to participate in the Gateway to Dentistry program at Rutgers School of Dental Medicine, which solidified my decision to pursue a career in dentistry, as I found within it a perfect blend of art and medicine. With the past three years of dental school under my belt, I have acquired knowledge and skills through my didactic and clinical education. This rigorous yet valuable training has enabled me to conduct patient interview and history taking, conduct dental and oral cancer screenings, diagnose dental disease, propose multiple treatment options, and make referrals for patients who require ongoing specialized or emergency treatment. In addition, I have acquired the clinical experience to successfully treat a sundry of cases in restorative dentistry, the …show more content…
As part of the program, I am treating twice the amount of patients while also garnering clinical experience in a private practice setting. Many of these patients have complex medical histories and require extensive dental care. I intend to use this coming year to excel in the various disciplines of general dentistry and to become comfortable treating medically compromised patients. Upon entering a residency program, my goals are to hone my skills in some of the more complex aspects of dentistry including molar endodontics, implant dentistry, complex prosthodontic cases, as well as periodontal

Getting a job out in the real world as a dental hygienist is not a problem right now because there is such a high demand for it. The factor that I see many hygienists look at is the pay. After doing a little research, I found out the Texas, California, Alaska, Nevada, and Arizona are some of the highest paying states in the dental hygienist field. The hourly average starting pay for a dental hygienist is $33. However, depending on where you work that hourly wage can go up or down.…

The exact opposite is happening in dental hygiene. New programs are popping up all over the country, graduating dental hygiene students in record numbers through accelerated curriculums that take 18 months or less in some schools.”) The future of dental work is expected to be more involved with technology making it even easier and improving their practices and serve more patients “(Hygienists all over the country are becoming entrepreneurs and designing unique ways to deliver care.…

Another good improvement was a learning the dental terminologies. Actually, I just knew all the terminologies from the school. I had recognized the terminologies with the dental instrument until I started to work at the dental office. Expectably, I learned fast and put a theory in practice by recognizing the dental terminologies with the dental instruments and actually using those instruments for patients. I was really satisfied myself to treat a patient’s teeth, and I was convinced that the professionalism at the dental office is matched to my interest and my future…

Another activity the dental club provides is practicing examining one another’s teeth on actual dental chairs, as real dentist do. The teacher tests us on how we correctly preform the steps of the procedure, by first carefully sterilizing our hands, then placing the proper gloves and eyewear, and finally inspecting the “patient” of resigns or decay. Not only did the club benefit me by attaining knowledge, it helped me interact with other students as a team, as a dentist and dental…

    Dentist Treatment Plan

In speaking with Dr. Dundee, my mind was put a little more at ease from the fact that he was very open to teach his ways in his office and that he is not completely turned off from hiring a dental hygienist with limited experience in treatment planning. While speaking with the other two dentists, I was a little bit more skeptical about working in these offices since their attitudes were not very open about new hygienests learning their ways of treatment planning. While preforming our practices in our clinic, we do not have very much exposure to restorative and cosmetic treatments for patients. It is not easy for me to be optimistic about walking into an office to apply for a job, which expects that I must know restorative work and coordinating procedures. In time I do think that all of us students will get so much exposure to these types of things that it will be no big deal to be able to treatment plan, inform the patients on the procedures, and know a general cost that the patient may endure.…

Introduction to the Dental Hygiene profession has been a complete and enjoyable class that set the core all the clinical documentation and protocol to follow here at Fortis college. As part of this class the instructor had create a variety of interactive assignments where students get to experience what it feels when having a real patient in front of them. Such was the clinic observation activity where we, the lower clinic class, had the opportunity to observe how students of a higher class were handling a full clinic section with the help of their high qualified instructors. One of the expectations I had for this activity was that I would be able to see the process of care in action, since the clinician brings the patient to the operatory…
