Not only is a vast amount of knowledge and schooling required, but also becoming a dentist demands additional training before one can become specialized in a field. There are nine specializations that a dentist can become. The amount of time needed to train for one of the nine specializations varies on the type chosen. These specializations are the ways to become an oral surgeon, orthodontist, or any of the other types of dentistry. However, to be a public health dentist, I will only need to get a state license to practice dentistry (U.S. Department of Labor, 2016).
Getting into dental school is competitive in today’s society. Along with a diverse background of courses, a good DAT score, and experience, a solid GPA is needed to get in (Bureau of Labor Statistics, & U. S. Department of Labor, 2015). A GPA of 3.0 is the minimum to even receive a chance of getting into a dental school. On the other hand, a competitive GPA is around a 3.6 on a 4.0 scale (Standard, 2015).
The starting salary of a dentist without experience is around 100,000 dollars in the United States. The median salary for a dentist in the United States is 150,000 dollars and the highest paid make 250,000 dollars. To attain a professional and salary advancement, an individual must obtain more experience and specialization.
