Dental Hygienist Personal Statement

Many students have unique incentives for choosing their major while others are rather straight forward. I believe mine is a combination of the two. Ever since I was young, I demonstrated an interest in the dental field. Teeth were always the very first thing I noticed about a person, including myself. When my adult teeth started to come in, there was so much overcrowding that my canine teeth were growing in my upper gums. I was not comfortable with my smile and in turn was not comfortable with myself. I never realized the true power dentists really had until my braces came off three years later and I saw how beautiful my smile was and how much it had transformed. I found myself smiling more than I ever had and that's when I realized what I want to do. Being the reason for someone's happiness is very rewarding and that is the type of environment I want to work in for the rest of my life. This year, I job shadowed at my local family dentistry and loved it. This made me even more eager to become a dental hygienist. During my senior year of high school, I challenged myself in order to prepare for college level courses. I was exceptionally determined. I took two harder science classes, AP Chemistry and Anatomy and Physiology, I worked nearly 20 hours in a school week, and was on the varsity cheerleading team all while maintaining a GPA of approximately 3.5 the majority of the year. I am hard-working, organized, dedicated, and a reliable individual, especially when it comes to school and work. Science is my favorite subject and this too has geared me towards dental hygiene.
