Dental Hygienist Personal Statement

Human anatomy has always fascinated me since my adolescent. I have always been eager to learn new information about the human body, which is why I was ecstatic to join a medical terminology class that my school offers. The class instructor was a former dental hygienist who shared her knowledge and love for dentistry. She explained how she was on the road to becoming a dentist when family obligations prevented her from continuing her curriculum. She then always encouraged her students to never allow anything to distract you from your lifetime goals. The manner she taught dentistry opened my eyes, I became particularly interested in the occupation, and I knew this is the profession I would dedicate my future to. From then on I made it a mission …show more content…
I am certain my academic studies and extra-curricular activities will benefit me in the long run as well as contribute to my lifetime goal of becoming a dentist.
Firstly, I began taking a medical terminology class with my mentor, Mrs. Salas, who offered insightful information about dentistry and gave after school classes to teach students the basics of becoming dental assistants. After seeing my interest in dentistry, she then asked if I would be interested in joining the dental club that she organized. The dental club meets several times a week to learn extra information about dentistry and we get to familiarize ourselves with various instruments, how to treat patients, and where to indicate particular complications on teeth. Another activity the dental club provides is practicing examining one another’s teeth on actual dental chairs, as real dentist do. The teacher tests us on how we correctly preform the steps of the procedure, by first carefully sterilizing our hands, then placing the proper gloves and eyewear, and finally inspecting the “patient” of resigns or decay. Not only did the club benefit me by attaining knowledge, it helped me interact with other students as a team, as a dentist and dental
