The typical day for dental office I observed began with a group meeting. There were 2 dental hygienists and one dental assistant. The Dental Hygienist I was shadowing checked to ensure the room was properly set before meeting the client. She then also provided a warm welcome to the client and took him to the room. The client was in for a cleaning. He seemed a bit nervous since his last cleaning was done about 15 years ago. In that case the dentist had asked him to gargle with a liquid after their procedure was done, but did not specify the client to spit it out. Client was new to dental procedures and ended up swallowing the liquid, resulting in ulcers in his food pipe. It was a perfect case of how important part communication plays in overall experience of the client. I noticed that the dental hygienist was listening to the client very empathetically and smiling constantly in order to make the client feel at ease. Overall she took a few extra minutes in order to explain the procedure to the client. She was very gentle while taking x-rays and then while doing the scaling. With this particular client she was explaining every step. After noticing the condition of the teeth, she complimented the client for taking care of his dental health, especially without any dentist visit for last 10-15 years. The client was visibly relieved and remained at ease throughout the procedure. Her use of open-ended questions made the client provide more information that he would actually
