As a dental hygienist the goal is to provide each patient with the most comprehensive and individualized care. Using the professional model of dental hygiene, the hygienist uses multiple steps for the standard of care. Dental radiographs are used during the assessment phase of the process of care and can be used to identify any oral anomalies. Some uses of radiographs can be by the hygienist and some by the dentists during treatment. Both professionals work together to benefit and improve oral health.…
When I went into the lab, we were placed with second-year students to observe them doing various tasks. The first thing I observed was the hygienist probing the patient’s mouth to determine the millimeters of each pocket around each tooth. I typed the depth of the pockets into the computer for her. There was a barrier over the keyboard that was removed because I did not have any gloves on. None of the depths exceeded 3 millimeters.…
The dental hygienist has become one of the 30 fastest growing occupations, and with the growing population and increase in the elderly, the need for dental hygienists has become much greater. In a typical dentists office the dental hygienist would have many responsibilities, such as teaching clients how important it is to maintain good oral hygiene and instructing them on the principles of preventive oral care. They would also help demonstrate to the patient how to brush and floss their teeth correctly, how to select the correct type of toothbrush for their teeth and analyze patients' diets and counsel them on how to eat right to maintain good dental and gum health. And although dental hygienists duties may vary from state to state due to their…
As a citizen of the Commonwealth of Virginia and ADHA member, I have the right to express my opinion and support unsettled legislation. Moreover, I can contact my Senator or Delegate and provide the information needed to persuade them to support a particular issue before the legislature takes action on it. In addition, becoming a member of VDHA and paying my membership fees, volunteering at dental health fair, and supporting community based programs will all help reach these goals. As a dental hygienist I am committed to patient care and public health through all means, including public education and other services.…
CAREER GOAL STATEMENT Name: Arshia Akbaruni I made the decision of getting into the dental hygiene career from the moment I made my first visit to the dentist. So far, I have been maintaining my academic record in good standing and shadowing a dental hygienist to learn more about the career.…
Thinking back on my elementary school years, I have vivid memories experiencing curiosity for my own, as well as my classmates’ “wiggly teeth.” Ever since then, my interest in dentistry has grown exponentially. The best interpretation of a dental hygienist that I can conceive is a professional whose main job is to teach their clients the essential oral hygiene skills and provide dental care in order for the client to maintain their overall oral health. Among the various responsibilities performed for the client to insure their health and safety includes making sure, we, as dental hygienists first do not harm to the patient by contaminating with pathogens that could have easily been disposed of by simply following the standard rules of infection control. As stated by Ester Wilkins “Dental healthcare personnel have a professional obligation to serve all patients with comprehensive oral care, including patients with known or unknown communicable diseases.…
Communication is vital since dental hygienists are constantly teaching patients how to have healthier teeth. Dental hygienists work individually with their patients in a direct manner in which they clean their teeth and also teach them how to take better care of their teeth. Oral health is a key health subject that dental hygienists teach their patients. They teach them various things such as which toothbrush they should use and how a good healthy diet can improve oral health as well (“Dental Hygienists” U.S. Bureau). Dental Hygienists also record if their patients show signs of abnormalities or diseases while inspecting their gums and teeth.…
Studies have highlighted that poor state of oral health in hospitalised patients is due to low priority given to oral care provision, poor knowledge of oral procedures by healthcare professional, lack of protocols assessment tool, lack of implementation of oral care regimes and lack of staff training. There are guidelines for the provision of high quality care for oral hygiene in hospital settings, but as the research points out, there is inadequate details for family carers. The help of carer’s and family during patient hospitalisation can make a great difference to this aspect of their care and well-being and more should be done to encourage their involvement (British Dental Foundation, 2014). The aim of this innovation is to; raise awareness for the need for effective oral health promotion, plan for change to make sure oral health promotion is provided, education and training is provided and assessment tools are provided; implement/execute the plan then evaluate the plan and ensure that the change becomes permanent. Innovation Objectives • Provide education and training to improve healthcare professional’s knowledge and skills.…

The objective of this assignment is to discuss the implementation, management, and treatment carried out for the patient (Roto Scan 14717). Patient X was first presented to me back in 2014 as she was referred from the dental department for a comprehensive periodontal treatment. The hygiene care was deferred to 2015 due to work commitment. A complete dental hygiene assessment was performed again this year as patient 's condition may have changed drastically since last appointment and thus previous observations and charting recorded may be incorrect. The key findings from the initial assessment appointment will be outlined in this essay before discussing the clinical interventions performed, referrals required, and the oral hygiene instruction…
