The National Council of State Boards of Nursing (NCSBN)’s definition of delegation is “the act of authorizing an unlicensed individual….to perform acts of registered nursing or licensed practical nursing” (PowerPoint presentation from week 15: Roles and Functions in Directing). There are “five rights of delegation” which are right task, right circumstances, right person, right direction/communication, and right level of supervision. These rights are important for nurses to properly delegate tasks to unlicensed assistive personnel (UAP).

The specific task I choose to give an example of is the right direction/communication. I believe direction and communication are very important pieces of delegation because nurses need to properly communicate with and direct their UAP how to accurately complete tasks. If the communication is delayed or impacted this can create negative outcomes for patient care.

I will be sure that my nursing assistants are comfortable with their tasks and if they are not, I will have them complete the task (within appropriate and legal circumstances) for their own experience. I have learned the importance of supervision and evaluation through this experience. I will be aware, as a nurse, to not abandon my nursing assistants after giving him or her a task or make them feel uncomfortable or overwhelmed.

I agree with the researchers who composed the article, “Delegation Practices Between Registered Nurses and Nursing Assistive Personnel”. when they said, “successful delegation is characterized by effective communication, teamwork and initiative” (Potter, P., Deshields, T, Kuhrik, M,
