Deforestation In The United States

Improved Essays
The environment is a unique unit and incorporates all the living and non-living components such as plants, animals, streams and lakes. Deforestation refers to the long-term loss of tree canopy and the conversion of the land to other purposes. The overuse of resources and the industrialization process are some major causes of this phenomenon. This process goes on without check leading to soil erosion, floods, silting of irrigation canals, all of which degrade the environment.
Deforestation in the United States is affected by many factors. One such factor is the effect, whether positive or negative, that the logging industry has on forests in the country. As stated by the U.S Forest Service, logging is nearly impossible to stop and it is a hotly

Logging either with permits or without permits goes on throughout the U.S. Companies with permits disregard them and harvest beyond what is allowed. The Forest Service and Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) work together to make sure that the permits for logging companies in the United States are granted in such a way that the forests are kept healthy and sustainable. Illegal logging reduces the chances of forests being kept this way. A way to help curb this issue is afforestation and re-afforestation. Afforestation is the planting of new trees to replace the cut ones whiles re-afforestation is planting of new trees on a bare land or on the land where there are no trees. When these practices are enforced properly it can turn bare land in a forest.NativeForest.org says these are not the best ways of solving deforestation particularly because people plant trees without retaining to see whether they have germinated or did not survive. When these trees are planted, periodic checks are not conducted to make sure …show more content…
With a focus on protected areas, management, and sustainable forestry, and the WWF work with governments, companies, communities, and other stakeholders to promote certification for responsible forest management practices, combat illegal logging, reform trade policies, and protect forested areas. With this, companies can come together to ensure healthy forest management practices. Moreover, encouraging substitutes can also be used as a way of solving deforestation in this context. For all purposes where tropical or other timber is used, other woods or material could be substituted. The use of timber can be stopped and urge others to do same. NativeForest.org states that as long as there is a market for wood products, trees will continue to be cut down but labelling schemes, aimed at helping consumers to choose environmental friendly timbers are currently being discussed in many countries(Anon,1910 d) and also ways to control the rate at which trees are cut . For instance quota can be used to regulate the cutting down of trees. A certain task force must be established to go round and check whoever found going contrary to this quota must be fined to pay huge sum of money or be prosecuted to prison so that it will serve as a deterrent to others to go contrary to the quota. Balancing forest protection and economic growth not only requires political leadership, but also

The article, American Forest Policy-Global Ethical Tradeoffs, addresses the issue of global increases in timber demand, especially within the United States, coupled with the decrease in timber production and forest cultivation within the U.S., and the potential solutions that may remedy the growing timber dilemma. The authors propose several solutions and discuss their potential benefits and costs, but overall, voice their preference of establishing forest plantations and practicing intensive forest management. The article is written is a very straightforward, factual way that is aimed at the general public, in an attempt to have them understand the unintentional hypocrisies of their actions of advocating reduced logging while still importing…

A phenomenon haze may be obvious because of excessive carbon emission that will pollute the air. The haze can cause people to suffer from certain health problems which include eye, nose, throat irritations and lung infections. These forests, like the amazon, were being cleared at a rate of 149 acres every minute, or 214,000 acres every day. The result of these forests and trees being cleared was that it was causing global warming, ozone depletion, species extinction, rain forest destruction and it has depleted fisheries and desertification. The amount of the amazon that was about one million acres or that is about 10% of the Amazon or about the size of Washington states Olympic peninsula. Each year 50,000 species were being extirpated that’s 137 each day.…

Although not all of deforestation can be stopped, it can be managed so that forests are sustainable, and we can still benefit from it, both economically and biologically. Worldwide wildlife organisations such as the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) and The Nature Conservancy are working on these goals. They have created protected areas in many places, and have also set up measure to combat illegal logging. Forest management and reforestation efforts have been taking place. Bioenergy, which are energy generated from scrap wood, sugars, starch crops and algae are being aggressively promoted for use over biomass, to reduce reliance on forests.…

Furthermore, the two countries that seem to have the largest deforestation issue in the world are Brazil and Indonesia. They are both countries that have vast amounts of rainforest and due to the increased demand around the world of timber, arable land, and soybeans, the amount of rainforest decreases on an annual basis. The Amazon rainforest is the largest on the planet and even though it spreads out to various countries around South America, the country that seems to be suffering the most from deforestation throughout this area is Brazil.…

Forests are a global resource, so logging forests in one country can affects other countries. For example, since 1950, erosion due to deforestation has caused the loss of 1.4 billion acres of soil worldwide. Heavier flooding in India’s Ganges Valley has caused $1 billion a year in property damage and is blamed on the loss of large forested watersheds in other countries. Nepal, one of the most mountainous countries in the world, lost more than half its forest cover between 1950 and 1980. This cutting destabilizes soil, increasing the rate of landslides, amount of runoff, and sediment load in streams.…
