(What are Civil Rights?, 2014) Civil rights traditionally revolve around the basic rights to be free from unequal treatment based on certain protected characteristics as mentioned above. In settings like housing and employment, your civil liberties are enacted. These concern basic rights and freedoms that are guaranteed- either explicitly identified in the Bill of Rights or United States Constitution, or implemented throughout the years by Courts and lawmakers. These include: your first amendment right to freedom of speech, your third amendment right, the right to privacy, your fourth amendment right to be free from unreasonable searches and seizures, your sixth amendment right to fair court trial, the fifteenth amendment, the right to vote and you also have the right to marry. Well, we’ve all watched the hit show Hawaii Five-0 on KGMB Friday nights, a retake on the Original Hawaii5-0 from back in the day. Try out an episode where you “follow” the letter of the law mixed in with the comedy and banter between the characters. I don’t believe the situation would be that detrimental to the series. If your rights are violated, what is the procedure? Who do you call? Well that depends if it is a criminal or civil suit. If it is criminal, the accused person is charged, if it’s a civil case then it’s an organization. In the criminal case they have to prove beyond a reasonable doubt that the person is culpable and a jury makes the decision. Whereas in a civil suit there needs to be a preponderance of evidence and the judge determines. More and stronger evidence is needed to obtain a criminal conviction than to prevail in a civil suit. (Federal Civil Rights Charges: What 's the Process?, n.d.) Civil rights and civil liberties are violated every day to some extent and we need to be more knowledgeable to not violate these rights. Television shows will always push boundaries to some extent and portray situations in an untruthful manner. But as long as the stage is purely for entertainment and not supposed to be a representative for any real scenario then I don’t think that things will really change much.
