Extrinsic Motivation In The Classroom Observation

After observing different classes I learned different teacher’s use different motivational strategies to encourage both academic and physical performance goals of students. In the first class I observed the teacher relied on extrinsic motivation to encourage her students to be active through a rewards system. Students where engaged in what was being asked of them because they were not only looking forward to the teachers praise but as well as the prizes throughout the period. She used incentives or the reward system, which aloud students who do well on a particular task to opt out of further task. In this class, the use of extrinsic motivation seemed to work well with the students who were less engaged in the class as well. Even the students …show more content…
Her use of promoting intrinsic motivation encouraged students to use their own personal autonomy to achieve their results and goals. The teacher provided the students with different choices and activities of completing task while encouraging students to explore their own interests or use of prior experiences to achieve their goals. Encouraging students to collaborate and providing feedback helps students to find their motivation. The class definition of intrinsic was “motivation that is inside the task- the activity is enjoyable in and of itself.” The example that was used was students who “enjoy reading novels and would be content to do so without encouragement or rewards from parents or teachers.” Through my observations I got to see how teachers encouraged students to engage in what they were learning in order for them to bring about a desired outcome. It was clear what students were intrinsically motivated because you could see they simply felt good when they succeeded in class. On the other hand, the class definition of extrinsic motivation was “ the motivation that is outside the task that included rewards and punishments.” The example that we used was “ doing laundry to earn some fame time on Friday night.” In the classroom, everyone likes to get rewards. The teachers that utilized this strategy offered students different chances to earn rewards which in return was an excellent source of motivation. Extrinsically motivated students involves some type of reinforcement that a teacher gives in order for them to successfully complete the task at hand. In the end, different teachers have different methods to motivating their students wheather it be intrinsic or extrinsic, it is up to the teacher to decided what works best with each student in order to help them succed at the task at
