Definition Essay: What Makes Someone Become A Hero?

Improved Essays
What makes someone into a hero? Is it superpowers or a cape or an awesome costume? No, no, and no, none of these make someone into a hero. People all say that heroes have to do something major to be a hero but that isn’t true. You can go out and see that someone needs help and you go help them, does that make you a hero? I say yes it does. Even though the world taught us that heroes run around in capes and costumes, the true heroes are the ones who go out of their way to do something good for someone else.
Not all heroes go and save people who are in life or death instances; occasionally they just help people with their homework or walk them across the street. My cousin was in a bad place and needed help with his homework and he asked me if

They can simply help people out. There is a quote from Maya Angelou that reads, “I think a hero is any person really intent on making this a better place for all people.” She is saying as long as you have the actual intent of making the world better then at that moment you can be considered a hero. You can’t just do it for the recognition you have to want to make the world a better place. Tom Hanks also had a very good quote that goes, “A hero is somebody who voluntarily walks into the unknown.” You also need to be comfortable with the uncomfortable. This is just meaning you can’t be afraid of the unknown; if you are then you won’t have the same feeling of I did something good. Now this next quote really speaks to me and this one comes from the movie Hercules and it is said by Zeus: “A true hero isn’t measured by the size of his strength, but by the strength of his heart.” This just shows me that you don’t need to be the strongest or the smartest. You just need to have the heart in the deed to receive that satisfaction. You can take the strongest man and he could be a very nice and humble guy, but it isn’t his strength that makes him humble; it’s his heart. When I picked these quotes I was thinking of quotes that I can take with me and just remember these quotes that help out all of us no matter who they are. By doing these things they still make you into a hero, so don’t think you need to go into harm's way to be a hero. Just help out others when they are in need. It doesn’t even have to be that big of a deal too. You can just go feed their animals while they are away or water their plants or anything like that. The little things could be big things for other

The best definition of a hero, as explained by Philip Zimbardo in “What Makes a Hero?” is, helping others in need without expecting anything in return. For example, Zimbardo tells the story of a massive earthquake in one of China’s provinces where the ceiling fell on a school and killed almost everyone inside, “[One] kid escaped and as he was running away he noticed two other kids struggling to get out. He ran back and saved them.” (Zimbardo). This kid saved the other two children knowing that he could have gotten stuck, and he saved them without expecting any sort of reward.…

Many people throughout the world would think heroes are the people with special powers and unstoppable strength. But even though everyone has a different view on what an actually hero is, heroes are still one of the most common groups on Earth. The word, hero, is mostly affiliated to words such as strength, alien-like powers, someone who can do the impossible, and many more. In my belief, being a hero does not mean that you have to those previously stated characteristics in order to be one. As long as you have reasonable and moral standards, anyone can be a hero. In this medieval romance poem, "Sir Gawain and the Green Knight", our hero, Sir Gawain did not fit the guidelines to be socially considered as a hero but by his actions he defied the standards and at the portrayed to be a true hero. For example, in the beginning in the story he volunteered for King Arthur which was more courageous than any of King Arthur's knights.…
