Definition Essay: The Seven Deadly Sins

Improved Essays
Society is full of people who sin on a regular basis. The most prevalent sins are known as the seven deadly sins, which are avarice, sloth, envy, concupiscence (lust), gluttony, pride, and wrath. Whether or not a person believes in God, there is a reason why John 8:7 in the bible states “He that is without sin among you, let him first cast a stone at her.” Everyone commits sins and we exercise that capacity routinely, but what matters most is how a person redresses it.
Students in my classes commit these sins daily. Sloth is the sin I see in most of my classmates, as many do not take school seriously; they arrive tardy, leave early, and spend most of their time on cell phones. Avarice, lust, and envy are also commonly committed in class.

The Catholic Church has delineated various pious and sinful actions that humans are capable of; it would logically follow that in Hell, these sins would be punished in respectfully distinct manners. However, how would one qualify which sin is the most egregious, and how would one decide which punishment would fit the crime? In The Inferno, Dante seeks to answer these questions in a grand categorization of religious sins, beginning with those of lack of baptism and ending with those of treachery.…

The 7 deadly sins come from religion and are known to be wickedest wrongdoings that can be done by humans here on earth. In Thomas H. Benton article, “The 7 Deadly Sins of Students”, he makes his argument by using the sins to say what students do wrong while also stating teachers aren’t so innocent. The two arguments that he makes in the passage from what I saw was the explanation of sins students do and how the educational system should take some notes from the liberal arts schools. The authors credentials are what really most people tend to pay close attention.…
