The definition of a hero has been debated about for centuries. Some will say that a hero is one that can fly, has super strength, or some other superpower. I say that a hero is someone that makes a significant impact to society and to life in general. A hero is the firefighters that helped bring people out of the twin towers when they were attacked. A hero is the policemen that put their lives on the line every single day to keep our world safe. A hero is the person that has gone through terrible circumstances and came out a stronger and better person. For that reason my hero is my dad. My dad had a job at the age of 14 and learned to drive on his own. My dad drank and got in fights like most teenagers these days. He stopped drinking when my mom was getting angry and worried that one day he was going to find someone he couldn’t fight or get himself injured. My mom didn’t like how he got when he was drinking, so consequently he stopped drinking. He met my mom when he was 17 and she was 15. He got his GED as he was going to be going into Sophomore year because his councilor told him he was never going to graduate anyway. My mom and dad started their life in a trailer house. They weren’t regarded as the sharpest or most intelligent in the area. They worked their way from the bottom to where they are now. My parents worked hard for what they had. They waited seven years after they got married to have a kid because they wanted to raise a child being financially

My father will contest that he did not have a bad childhood, but most people would agree that a home situation like that would not be ideal. I do, however, believe it effected the way I was raised. To this day I have never seen my father take a swig of any type of alcohol. I’ve never had to hear my dad stumble in the door at 2 o’clock in morning, because he was too drunk to drive home from the bar.…

The movie captures Paul and Norman’s very different lives as they get older. Although Paul and Norman grew up in the same house and were raised by the same parents, as they get older their differences begin to show immensely through times such as when Norman went off to university and Paul stayed in Montana, when the viewer is introduced to Paul’s bubbly personality and Norman’s quieter personality, and when the viewer finds out that Paul has a drinking and gambling problem and Norman does not. My entire world was turned upside-down my junior year of high school. My father’s health deteriorated to the point where he was forced to make the difficult decision to be admitted into the Veterans’ Home after living with Multiple Sclerosis for thirty-five long years. The two of us didn’t always get along, but at this point I wanted nothing more than to do the impossible and rescue him from the place where I believed he didn’t fit. After all, a man his age should not have to live in a nursing home. I felt sick to my stomach the first night I walked out of Fifer, the building my father now calls home.………

The ones who ran around with a cape swishing in the wind, but as I grew older, I figured out that heroes are average Joes that do extraordinary things. Heroes come in all shapes and sizes, different types of ethnicities, and all different backgrounds. They all have different stories. Some heroes fight for our country.…

Looking back at it now a lot of the things I’ve learned from my dad were just skills on how to survive. Some of the things he never taught me though was the importance of an education. Nothing he ever said would back that statement up but actions speak louder than words. I was never pushed to do better or to take more challenging courses. In high school, I would rather aim low and hit than aim high and miss.…

Some people have to suffer through abusive parents or drug addict family members, maybe deaths of people they love when they’re young or maybe they’re dirt poor. No matter the circumstance they’re people that have to deal with this, and then there’s those of us that get a “get out of jail free card” in life. My dad was not one of those people, he went through a lot to get to where he is now. Tragic events led me to obtain a substantially less amount of information about my father’s family. The story of his parents—William Chapman and Alice Lewis—is a very emotional one, as they started out as the typical young American couple before mental illness changed the foundation of their relationship. After dating for about a year, the two married and began building their life together. Alice worked as a CNA, while William—commonly referred to as Bill—worked as a newspaper delivery boy. The couple had five children together—Tammie, Robert, Billy, Patrick, and Mark.…
