A house is a building where someone occupies whereas a home is a location that someone feels a sense of belonging to. The term 'house' is an old English word called 'hus' which means welling, shelter, home or house. The term 'home' is an old English word called 'ham' which means dwelling, shelter or a building used as a residence. Consider a homeless man for example. Would you consider a homeless man's home to be where he is currently live or would you consider it to the be where he longs to belong again? What if I said he does not belong anywhere, that he moved around from house to house as a child and then ended up on the streets as an adult. All that homeless man have is his protection, but yet, that is not guaranteed to him. A house does not guarantee a person a happy home. To a homeless man, it does not matter where home is, it is where he feels safety and protection against the outside world.
