Freedom, what is it? Freedom can be many things, but many people would say that it is the ability to exert one's own free will. According to Dictionary.com, freedom is the state of being free or at liberty rather than in confinement or under physical restraint. Neither of these definitions is strong enough. To me, freedom is a mixture of the two definitions with a little more added to it. Being free is being able to exert one's own free will whenever needed and whenever wanted. Also, all freedom comes with a price, and that price can be many things. Throughout our history, many people went to extraordinary risks with extraordinary costs just to be free. Some of these people were Moses and the Israelites.
To start, it must be said that freedom is not indeed free. Why might it not be free some may say? The fact is that in order for something to become free, a sacrifice must be made. Many things that must be sacrificed in order to have freedom are wealth, time, labor or even a life. For example, a slave trying to escape bondage must make time to plan ahead. There are many great examples that can be brought up, but one of the best ones would be Moses leading his people, the Israelites, away from slavery in Egypt to Freedom in the promise land. The story of Moses and Pharaoh is a great example of freedom and why it comes with a cost is because when he wanted Pharaoh, his adopted brother, to let his people go Pharaoh would not. When he didn’t God would send a plague among the Egyptians. The first plague was that all running water around Egypt turned into blood. The next nine times that Moses asked Pharaoh to “Let my people go.” Pharaoh said no and god sent 9 more plagues. Finally Pharaoh said yes at the cost of his people and more importantly his
