The military recognizes leadership as being “the process of influencing people by providing purpose, direction, and motivation while operating to accomplish the mission and improving the organization” (FM 6-22, 2006, p. 1-2). Moreover, it defines three core attributes that a leader should exemplify, following a formula of: BE, KNOW, and DO. A soldier should be in line with the common values and ideals of both their nation and military, to help shape a leader’s character. The knowledge that a leader gains through experience and tutelage helps them identify which actions they should take. Everything that a leader does directly impacts the behavior of their subordinates (FM 6-22, 2006).
