Today 51% of elementary students are scoring below average on NAEP(The National Assessment of Educational Progress) reading tests. Students are lacking in critical appreciation due to the fact that students don’t get enough sleep or students just wing it most of the time. Students don’t learn the content knowledge because they are too focused and worried about passing, which will lead to not putting an effort to learn the content, only parts that are needed to pass a test. Some problems that lead to this are that students are failing to understand to importance of reading and have no presence of the right content book. Furthermore students need to understand the meaning of the words as well as they read it. Students also lack in English, students who lack these skills may have unsatisfactory writing, and bad organization. About two third of of eighth graders can't read properly and about two thirds of eighth graders scored below a proficient grade in reading scores. Even though students lack in these areas they know key skills of English. This is important because this shows that education is a work in progress and will always keep changing methods and the effectiveness. More than a half of students that go to college for four years and more than three fourths of students that go to college lack the skills of complex literacy. This means students in college weren’t able to understand or explain tables, or be able to understand written opinions of an argumentative paragraph, compare and contrast credit offers or summarize results of a survey. About 30% of two-year college students had only simple math skills and about 20% of four-year college students had basic quantitative skills. Although college students are missing some skills they have superior skills in searching and using information from texts and documents. It might be a good idea if students set goals so that they will be more motivated to work if they know what goals they are working towards. It might also be helpful to point out when students are learning skills that will help them later in the same course especially when the material is difficult. This is important because college students don't know principal skills needed to be known to get through college and graduate. Overall college students are graduating without knowing skills of interpreting or summarizing, which is going to be difficult because without these skills it will be hard to have a
