The protagonist in Deep Wizardry by Diane Duane is Nita Callahan. Nita is a thirteen year old girl with red hair and blue eyes. Before Nita became a wizard, she was the "geek" that other kids beat up. She is a kind, grown up girl, who is brave, determined and a bit ignorant when it comes to whale ceremonies. Nita is exceptionally good at speaking to animals, better than most wizards. Her best friend Kit Rodriguez is a small dark haired boy with light brown eyes. He is a smart mouthed kid, who gets picked on often and has few friends, but that was when he was not a wizard. He is absolutely loyal to Nita, and cares about everyone.
