A noticeable pattern of these wars is that we are defending the freedom that the Declaration gives us, or we are fighting to defend the unalienable rights of others. The Declaration itself asserts principles that we have fought for in conflicts throughout the centuries. In the Revolutionary War, we were oppressed by England, but we fought to regain our freedom. This happened again in the War of 1812 when England tried to regain control. In the Civil War, we had conflict within our own country, and we fought to make all men equal and to make sure that no one had the right to take freedom away from someone else. In World War II and other international wars, we have protected and defended the rights and freedom for citizens of other nations. The Declaration of Independence is relevant today because it establishes freedoms we have fought for over so many years.
