Decisions are things we make every day. In the book Lyddie by Katherine Paterson Lyddie (the main character) helps keep her parents farm in shape. She has 3 siblings, and was happy there… until her mother goes to Lyddie’s aunts house and brings the smallest children with her because she thinks it’s the “end”. Lyddie’s mother writes a letter to her and her brother Charlie a little bit after she leaves. The letter told them that they had to work to pay off a debt. Lyddie first goes to work at a tavern that was near the mill where Charlie would go and work, soon she decides to start working at a industrial factory. Rachel is sleeping next to Lyddie (who is awake) in the bedroom. Lyddie thinking “ It might break rachel’s heart as well. She has been sent away too often in her short life” (139). Lyddie finds out Rachel is sick from what happened to her old roommate Betsy. She is thinking about sending Rachel away so she can get better. Lyddie is in the bedroom thinking again “ There would be nothing to eat there the cover was gone and no crops planted” (140). Both Rachel and Lyddie are in the bedroom again. Lyddie is thinking about Rachel’s cough again. She said to herself that the cough would go away in a couple of weeks. Since they would take July off they could go back to the farm, but there wasn't really much to go back to since they sold most of the crops and the animals. Another time in the bedroom with Rachel and Lyddie “Oh Rachel. You need to go to school.” (134). Lyddie and Rachel are talking to each other and deciding whether Rachel is going to school or work at the factory, but Lyddie wants Rachel to have a good education. Rachel on the other hand wants to become a doffer and work hard just like Lyddie. This shows Lyddie shouldn’t sign the petition because she needs her job to provide things for Rachel, things like education, a home, and to be safe and
