Dear Future Gateway Student

If you were like me, you’re probably pissed off over the fact that you have to waste your summer in school. Especially since I missed top ten percent by ONE person. I pictured spending the whole summer with my girlfriend, friends, and family. When I was first notified of my partial acceptance, I’m not going to lie, I was upset. I had debunked Texas A&M University as my number one choice for my post-secondary endeavors. Then, I realized that this opportunity was once in a lifetime, as you may know Texas A&M University is one of the best colleges in the World.

I anticipated for college students to be offensive and careless since I was an incoming freshman. However, it was the complete opposite, here at Texas A&M everyone is extremely nice, helpful, and welcoming. I actually first hand experienced the aggies kindness and careful personalities by accidentally losing my dorm key and wallet the first week of Gateway and getting both of my items returned within a day. Similarly, I envisioned college to be uncomplicated, undemanding, and unchallenging identically to High School. Yeah, don’t come in thinking you’re a genius, because you will be shocked. College is difficult. High school does not get you prepared whatsoever for college. Lastly, I expected to always be relaxing and having fun in my free time which was not the case here in A&M.

One thing that this ACA-122 class has taught me is how to email somebody properly; such as a professor, teacher, or anyone really. It’s impacted me because I had questions and had to email someone, but I didn’t know the correct format and how. The second thing is time management. Yes, you will have a ton of assignments due, but you have at least three weeks to do it for ACA. It impacted me because I do procrastinate and if you do that, it can be a problem for ACA.…

As a senior I am approaching the final days of high school and over the course of four years I’ve had the privilege to visit colleges and catch a glimpse of what the experience is like. Furthermore, my partner is in his second semester of college as a first year and consequently he gives me advice as well as telling me about his experiences so far. In the beginning he was slightly nervous to be in a different environment, but that quickly came to an end when he made acquaintances. As a male in college the experience is not what was expected in high school. Many are focusing and getting the job done while taking it seriously.…

There are numerous stereotypes about college students. Many of them say that the students have a lot of fun, but there are those that describe the dark side of the life in a university. Unfortunately, some of them describe it in colours that are even darker than dark. To my mind, it is important that people know the truth and do not have the wrong idea about college in their mind. What is more, these stereotypes should not create fear in the minds of school students that are about to go to higher level education institutions.…

If I must admit, the transition from high school to college was arduous. I was like a bird that was waiting for its owner to tell me which way to go or what song to sing. In high school, there was a pattern that I had to follow in regards to the waking up, having breakfast, the student/teacher ratio/ etc. In college, it was completely different. Most of my classes were either in the afternoon or in the evening.…

In this course, the students were asked to act like a critically-literate citizen, which is someone who uses their skills as a literate person to impact society in a positive way. The point of this class is to strengthen our writing skills to become an even more effective citizen. To help strengthen our writing skills and to give us a way to organize our writing, we were told to use the MEAL Plan, which are paragraphs broken down into main ideas, evidence and analysis, and linking back to the larger claim. Our assignments included discussion boards with topics stated from the instructor, peer review responses to the discussion board assignments, writing essays, writing reflections essays, summarizing passages, and peer review responses from the essay our partner wrote. At first I was terrified about taking this class because I was already behind in this class when I started, but once I caught up, I was overjoyed with excitement about my grade.…

Most people think that college kids are all disrespectful, partying kids who never do their work and will do whatever possible to get some alcohol in their hands. Some people may believe that these movies give the perfect idea of what college is but they are actually terrible examples. Have you ever seen any movies about a college focusing on the kids studying for a test?…

Before this class began I expected this class to show me the ins and outs of being a successful college student. My assumptions were very valid, because every assignment we have worked on has had something to do with being a successful college student. Before taking this course I was not knowledgeable about many resources I have at Cedar Valley. In this course I had to figure out things by myself and take responsibility as a college student. I had to stay on top of my assignments because nobody else would be checking for me.…
