Superior Essays
Submarines play a somewhat big part of pop culture. They have inspired countless movies, books, songs, and sandwiches. One of the most famous movies about submarines is Das Boot It takes place in 1942 in a German submarine fleet. The fleet is in the middle of the "Battle of the Atlantic". Its job is to destroy and disrupt British shipping. "Das Boot" is the story of the crew of a German U-Boat. The movie received 8.5 stars and is viewed as a classic movie by many people (Hughes).
In 1578 William bourne made the first plans for a submarine. It was the earliest known plans for a submarine. He is famous for saying, “ It is possible to make a ship or boat float that may go under the water onto the bottom and so come up again at pleasure…”

The way that the newer subs work is either through nuclear power, diesel, or electrical. To be able to run the diesel engines through the submarines must be surfaced first. The use of the diesel engines is usually to just charge batteries for the electrical so they can go back under unless they have nuclear power. For subs to be able to submerge and surface from the water they use these ballast tanks that change their buoyancy by either filling them with water to go down or removing water to go up.While the subs are above water they can just use GPS to navigate around but while the subs are underwater they navigate using sonar but they are virtually blind because the sonar requires sound to bounce off of something which is only useful if there is a ship or other subs around. There are two different types of sonar there is aggressive and passive, aggressive is when they send out a wave and passive is when they wait for one to be sent out and basically catch …show more content…
There are also private builders that build their own subs for cheaper, one guy built a submarine that was almost able to go 1,000 feet underwater for only 50,000 dollars. If you build your own sub though you must get confirmation from a coast guard to be able to take it out into the water. In Columbia, they found two personal subs that were used for drug smuggling holding around 4 tons of cocaine and held up to 5 crew members this sub was also able to stay underwater for up to 10 days

An UMS similar to DARPA’s ASW Continuous Trail Unmanned Vessel (ACTUV) could be used to detect and track these submersibles for long periods of time and handoff their locations to drug enforcement officials (Ackerman, 2012). Time and money could be saved by allowing the UMS to patrol designated areas and pass the data to a manned vessel, freeing up assets for more important tasks. While the ACTUV itself may be overkill for such a task, a similar vessel with sensors designed specifically for detecting the small submersibles and speed boats used for drug smuggling could help shutting down the Caribbean as a means for transporting…

We bought an old Apache pop up tent trailer for $250 for weekend recreation. The trailer had seen better days, but I decided I could make new canvas sides and rebuild it. I took the old cloth off the trailer and disassembled the panels so I could get a pattern just as I had done with the Porsche S-90 seats.…

The “War to End all Wars?”/ The Ethics of World War I Technology On April 4, 1917 United States troops marched into the First World War with President Woodrow Wilson’s message echoing in their ears; this would be a “war to end all wars” to “make the world safe for democracy” (Nolte). However, 8.5 million deaths later, the Great War proved far from ending future conflict (“World War I”). The development of lethal gases, stealthy submarines, and destructive artillery made war more gruesome, paving the way for Hitler, Stalin, and later Saddam Hussein. The militaries of the First World War defied the ethics of just war, because new weapons caused unnecessary suffering, attacked innocent civilians, and demonstrated the potential of new technology…
