Dark and silent, I crouched in the closet. With my hands clamped over my sister’s eyes, I blocked the horrific sight that lay in front of us. A man stood, holding an object, black as night, over the unconscious body of my father. Masked, he wiped the fingerprints from his weapon only to slip it into my father’s hands, raise it, and pull the trigger. My sister let out a whimper, audible, but muffled by the a loud bang. The assassin dropped the weapon, and as he stood, he removed his dark mask. When the man turned, he locked eyes with me, a pained expression on his face, before disappearing into the hallway. “Caine, Caine”, someone whispered urgently. I looked down, my sister was talking, “Caine!”.

I awoke in a mass of pillows and blankets sweating as if I had been running from something. The cellulite of my sister stood in my doorway. “Caine”, she whispered, “I can’t sleep”. I groaned as I sat up, knowing that she had had a dream much like mine. “It’s late Lilybeth, I have to get up early for work tomorrow.”
