Dante's Inferno Research Paper

Dante was born in 1265 in a family deeply involved in Florentine politics, His mother died a few years after he was born. At age 12 he was arranged to be married with a daughter of a family friend whose name was Gemma Donati. They married around 1285 but he was in love with Beatrice Portinari. Beatrice would be a huge influence on the Divine Comedy. Dante and Beatrice met when she was 9, it was thought to be love at first sight. They knew each other for years and he secretly loved her from afar. Unfortunately, she died in 1290. Around the time of her death he began to heavily study the philosophy of Florentine political scene.

The Pope and other figures from the Florentine politics finds a place in the hell he creates, the Inferno.In 1312, Dante met with the other exiles to meet up with the new emperor in Pisa. By 1314, Dante had completed Inferno the segment set in hell, and in 1317 he settled at Ravenna and there he completed the Divine Comedy. It's presented as a trip through the Christian afterlife to warn the corrupt society to steer itself to the path of righteousness. It follows his journey through levels of hell, purgatory, and finally heaven. The Roman poet, Virgil, guides him through hell (Inferno) and purgatory (Purgatorio), while his lost love, Beatrice, guides him through heaven (Paradiso). In Inferno, there are various types of sinners in their various states. There's nine circles of hell, each circle is reserved for those who committed different sins. Virgil leads Dante up the Mount of Purgatory through the seven levels of suffering in spiritual growth. Beatrice represents divine Enlightenment and leads him through the nine levels of heaven.
