Daniel Plainview is “an oilman” and the protagonist of Anderson’s film There will be Blood; he is illustrated with many different characteristics throughout the film. Daniel is initially seen in rural California as a rugged and sturdy man. In the first fifteen minutes of the film even with the lack of dialogue Daniel is characterized as a single-minded prospector in the deserts of California in search of silver. Further, throughout the film, many distinctive characteristics of Daniel Plainview are revealed, such as his greed and lust for power and prosperity, which can be seen when, states that he has “competition in me” and he wants “no-one else to succeed”. He is an antihero so corrupted by greed and power that he loses sight of himself and his obsessions drive him to solitary madness. Daniel Plainview shows many characteristics in particular, his dislike for people. Stating that “I hate most people” and that he “sees the worst in people” thus establishing his negative views of others and he refers them as “these people”. That being the case, Plainview felt no hesitation, and also felt justified in using "these people" to get what he wants. Daniel does commit numerous villainous acts that illustrate him as the antagonist as he murders two significant characters of the film. Thus due to his wealth he develops an egotistic personality which contributes to why he prefers himself to be the most dominant individual no matter what circumstance whether its in terms of wealth or anything in general.
