Lakalaka is a dance form from the island Tonga, a small island between Australia and New Zealand. Lakalaka literally means, “to stride back and forth” and is one of the only Tongan dances to be considered truly indigenous (Shumway, 29). Lakalaka is a dance form that combines dance, poetry, and music to celebrate the “goodness of the Tongan way of life” (Shumway TWO, 468). I chose to research this dance because I know nothing about it and it seems to not be prevalent in many other countries besides Tonga. In researching Lakalaka I would hope to gain more knowledge about the dance and the Tongan culture.…

Babies are not born with the ability or knowledge of how to move their bodies, besides a few instinctual reflexes that they use to survive the beginning days and weeks of life. This is due to their new environment outside of the womb which includes gravity, a factor that a newborn infant has not been exposed to until birth, along with the fact that an infant 's muscles are still developing (Meyerhoff, 2016). Therefore, they are dependent on those around them to move and adjust their bodies for them. Then the question might be asked: how does a baby begin to learn how to move and use their body in this new environment? A widely known and recommended technique that is used to develop muscle strength and prevent motor delays in infants is Tummy…

It’s no question that the critically acclaimed film, The Great Gatsby, brings a fresh new look to the eyes of those who love 20s culture, by the soundtrack and dances. with its fusion of Hip-hop and Ragtime themes integrated with Hip-hop dance into Ragtime style in such a way to give both a feeling of nostalgia and blossoming. Then there are those who are more conservative in the art tastes they expected from the film, questioning the remixes as a remote abomination. Are these critics right? Not to one degree, as the combination goes so very well together as to compliment both the rage of the 20s, as well as a fresh twist of hip-hop tones, all to enhance the movie experience and seek out likability within this modern age.…

My research is about searching for ways to lengthen a dancer’s performing career while using Laban Movement Analysis as the primary tool for research and solution. In defining “career longevity” for this specific research, I am focusing on preventing dance related injuries in order to lengthen the number of years of performing on stage. The average dancer stops performing in their 30’s. Increasing the longevity of movement ability positively correlates with increased performance opportunities and diversity in dance styles. Furthermore, more performance experience will allow the dancer to acquire more information that they can then use to teach, if they so choose to make the transition into education.…

The very first part of this dance strongly represented their intimacy by utilizing non-locomotor actions of the body, with very small bounds to each other and slow movements. The dance started with a man sitting on the floor while he was folding his legs. He was holding a lady upside down with her feet that were close together and pointed to the sky. As the camera zoomed in, it could be clearly seen that one of her leg slowly declined, followed by the other leg. After that, the female dancer bent her body and put her head on the man’s thigh, whereas the male dancer laid down his upper half on the lady’s back and his hand traced to all the curve on this woman body.…
