As the conductor, Jeff Tyzik, stated, this piece is recognizable within the first two seconds. The film, as most people know, is a British comedy, which is easily seen through the music. The detective theme is portrayed through the key and laid back, sneaky rhythm. The theme is also instilled through great dynamic contrasts; these dynamic changes are very important in making the theme come to life due to the repetitive nature. However, the repetitive nature is also what makes the piece memorable. Pink Panther is a combination of jazz and swing and is performed with typical jazz instruments (saxophone, trumpet, trombone, etc.). Throughout the piece there is a syncopated rhythmic pattern with the overall strong beat of each measure. Performed in duple meter, the tempo remains the same throughout. Mancini created this piece to be very rhythmic with staccato to accent beats. In this piece, as in many pieces of music, the melody is the main focus, staring with the saxophone soloist, then the whole group, and then to another woodwind soloist. There is a point in the piece where the saxophone soloist strays from the melody, improvises, and then returns to the melody. Harmony throughout the piece remains more consonant although there are moments that sound dissonant. Any of the pieces would be excellent pieces to write about, but these two stood out; Superman, takes the audience on a journey from his entrance, to a victorious battle, and then to soaring through the clouds alongside a great hero. Pink Panther, on the other hand, relies heavily on rhythm, lightness, and dynamic contrast to demonstrate the whimsical nature of the film and characters.
