Glass. In modern times this substance is used as a basic necessity for windows, car windshields, bottles, jars, glasses, dishes, etc. Glass was discovered by Egyptians in the sixteenth century B.C. when experimenting with their pottery. During the fifthteenth century, the Egyptians started venturing into glass vessel making. Later, the Phoenicians and Mesopotamians followed suit by developing a fairly adequate method of glass blowing. To describe glass blowing in brief, glass must first be heated in a furnace to alter its shape easier. Once cold, glass cannot be molded into a different configuration. When the glass is still hot, air, usually from human lungs, is blown through a pipe to expand a bubble that will eventually become the inside of a new glass creation. More glass is gathered and the step above is repeated until the desired size is reached. Lastly, the pipe is cut off and voila, a new glass piece is born! Many cooperative and creative people must come together to make a single sculpture. Designers, planners, and blowers are examples of the job positions needed for creating blown glass sculptures. Dale Chihuly was born on September 20, 1941 in Tacoma, Washington. After graduating from the University of Washington where he studied interior design and architecture, Chihuly went on to be enrolled in a premiering glass program at the University of Wisconsin. Chihuly went on to the Rhode Island School of Design and continued researching and working with glass. Soon after, Dale formed and taught his own glass program. Metal and glass are the primary components of Chihuly sculptures. Ever since he was a boy, Dale loved glass; in fact, he describes glass as being “mysterious and magical”.
