Daisy Lee Gatson Bates was a mentor to the Little Rock Nine, the African-American students who integrated Central High School in Little Rock in 1957. She and the Little Rock Nine gained national and international recognition for their courage and persistence during the desegregation of Central High when Governor Orval Faubus ordered members of the Arkansas National Guard to prevent the entry of black students. She and her husband, Lucious Christopher (L. C.) Bates, published the Arkansas State Press, a newspaper dealing primarily with civil rights and other issues in the black community. The identity of Daisy Gatson’s birth parents has not been conclusively established. Pursuing a mostly uncharted analysis of an over-analyzed canon text provides a certain level of challenge that at times breaks from the critical literary tradition. Glenn Settle in her article, “Fitzgerald’s Daisy: The Siren Voice” delineates an interpretation of the American canon work, The Great Gatsby, that has been pursued with F. Scott Fitzgerald’s European modernist contemporaries but somehow excluded his works. Though Fitzgerald spent much of his time in Europe, especially the French Riviera, a deep analysis of works in the same classical light seems to be frequently lacking, whether that roots from Eurocentric assumptions about American authorship or mere oversight is yet to be known. Settle’s text seeks to officiate the consideration of Daisy, in The Great Gatsby, as a Homeric Siren.…

The article “Where There’s a Will, There’s a Way” (Harrington,2012), mentions the fact that people have been struggling for years to become more resilient to the areas in which they work, live, and play. I never thought of using that part of the clip for we-not-me orientation example. When watching the clip I didn't even realize that the young women said that. I think it was nice of her to try to make Daisy more comfortable and to acknowledge her profession. I think they tried to do the best to accommodate someone who wasn't in their socioeconomically status. At the same time it was almost condescending to judge her or feel they need to accommodate her based on her job profession.…
