Brief Description of the Activity: The activity will begin with students drawing a self portrait on a cue card. They must choose a colour that represents them and use the colour more than once in their portrait. After everyone is finished their self portrait, we will make a bar graph as a class to represent the class’ favourite colours. This activity will begin to show students what the axis of the graph are and introduce proper mathematical language (axis, scale, and one to one correspondence, mode).

The idea originated from a website called Joyful Learning (see picture on the right), but was changed drastically by Hunter and Maeve to fit the Ontario Grade 1 Mathematics and Arts Curriculums.

The students are learning to sort pictures by colour for this activity, which helps address the two specific expectations listed above for Mathematics. Each group’s graph looked a little different, which you can see through the pictures. The third group chose many colours, which didn’t all fit on our graph chart paper. If this was an actual grade 1 class, you would have to limit the colour choice to just five in order for them to all fit on the paper. There are other ways of presenting this activity to the class. For example, you could do it in the yard outside using chalk to make a large graph on the cement. This would make it more physical and interactive for the students and will allow them to use more
