CYGNUS

One of the most prominent constellations in the night sky, and one of the most involved and eventful regions of space, the Cygnus constellation and its surrounds are fascinating, and a worthwhile talking point for many a topic. Occupying an area of 804 square degrees, Cygnus is the 16th largest constellation in the night sky; it lies in the fourth quadrant of the northern hemisphere, with right ascension at 20.62, and declination at +42.03: in other words, if you were in the northern hemisphere and stood outside about an hour after sunset, you’d see it almost directly above you.
Cygnus is Latin for ‘swan’, and has various mythological tales connected to it: the most widely known, perhaps, is one of Greek mythology, where Zeus disguised himself as a swan to seduce Leda, the wife of Spartan king Tyndareus, who later gave birth to the Gemini (Castor and Pollux), Helen of Troy and Clytemnestra. To celebrate the births, Zeus is said to have placed the swan among the stars. The Greeks also associated this constellation with the story of Phaethon, son the sun god Helios, who demanded to ride his

Some of the most imposing figures in the constellation are the bodies that make up the asterism the Northern Cross (and in the case of Deneb, one third of the Summer Triangle). Although Cygnus itself is sometimes referred to as the Northern Cross, much like Crux in the south is known as the Southern Cross, the constellations actually contain more stars than those forming the asterisms: the Northern Cross follows Cygnus’ shape, but appears as if the swan has had its wings ‘clipped’, as it were. More distinct, and larger than its southern counterpart by far, the Northern Cross is pieced together from five major stars: Alpha, Beta, Delta, Gamma and Epsilon Cygni, otherwise known as Deneb, Albireo, Rukh, Sadr and Gienah,

In world history, Cyrus the Great (600 - 529 BCE) is a lofty character. He is the "father of the Iranian nation". He was the first world leader to be referred to as "The Great". Though he was a conqueror, he was successful as a ruler not through might but through kindness and the Cylinder of Cyrus provides archaeological proof of that. Compare on a map the earlier Egyptian and Mesopotamian empires to the Persian Empire.…

Many ancient civilizations worshipped the sun, stars, and the moon, believing it would bring them closer to their gods. In Assyrian and Babylonian civilizations, they gazed up into the sky each night and recorded what they saw. They realized that the stars orbited in the same way each night. “They soon learnt to recognize those that seemed fixed to the vault of heaven, reappearing each night in the same place. And they saw shapes in the constellations and gave them names” (Gombrich, 20).…

Hydra is the largest constellation recognized by the International Astronomical Union, it stretches from the south end of Caner to in between Libra, Centaurus and the Scales. I like Hydra because even though it is such a huge constellation, there isn't a prominent identifier, but when you do see it, it demands to be admired and you can't forget that it's there. In Chinese astronomy, Hydra contains three constellations within itself; Liu, Xing and Zhang. The myth behind Hydra ties into the myth of Hercules.…

As one of the oldest cradles of civilizations, Ancient Egypt has an enormous system of mythology just like other famous civilizations. In these myths and legends, different gods are famous for their different personalities and symbolizations. For example, Bastet is recognized as the goddess of fire, cats, home and pregnant women; Anubis is widely known as the god of the dead; Osiris, almost the most important god in the myths of Ancient Egypt, is usually considered as the god of the dead, rebirth, and fertility. However, in this paper, I will focus mainly on the Osiris for his agricultural significance to the Ancient Egypt. God of the Dead and Rebirth When we talk about the god of the dead in Egypt, the first thing that comes to most of us is Anubis who has a human-like body and a…

Ursa Minor (Latin: "Smaller She-Bear", contrasting with Ursa Major), also known as the Little Bear, is a constellation in the northern sky. Like the Great Bear, the tail of the Little Bear may also be seen as the handle of a ladle, hence the name Little Dipper: seven stars with four in its bowl like its partner the Big Dipper. It was one of the 48 constellations listed by the 2nd-century astronomer Ptolemy, and remains one of the 88 modern constellations. Ursa Minor has traditionally been important for navigation, particularly by mariners, because of Polaris being the North…
