Cyberbullying Case Summary

Lindsay’s dad defended her cyberbullying by saying it was Lindsay’s right of freedom of speech. Do you think he handled the situation correctly? Why or why not? (2pts) No, I do not, because it is not her right to harass people on social media him being an attorney should know this. If it was his daughter being bullied and she about took her life, he would be doing everything in his power to sue someone. So I don’t think he handled it correctly, he should have told Taylor’s mom that he would talk to his daughter, and that he is very sorry for what his daughter has been saying. He should have asked to see what his daughter was saying to her, to see what he needed to do to fix the problem.

Her father didn’t seem to care at all that his daughter was bullying someone. He even tried to defend her and say it was her 1st amendment right to talk freely about someone. You could tell there was no rules, structure, or guidance. That he let her do pretty much whatever she wanted. This hurt Lindsay in the bullying situation, because she doesn’t have anyone to look up to. Her mother past away so she only has her father, and he doesn’t care what she does. So I think her father hurt her because he is not a good role model.
Should parents be held accountable for unexpected consequences of their child’s postings, whether in a blog, chat room, or instant message that may lead to someone taking their life? (3 pts)
I don’t think the parents should be held accountable all the time, because many parents have no idea what is even going on. I do think parents that know should be help accountable. Lindsay’s dad in the movie didn’t care at all that his daughter was cyberbullying. He was saying it was her first amendment right, but being an attorney you would think he would know that the 10 amendments are to protect citizens against the state. I think if Taylor went though and killed herself that he should have consequences since he was informed about his daughter, and did nothing to try and stop it. I don’t think parents that have no idea about the bullying should face consequences

Children are curious by nature; the urge to explore the unknown is in their blood. Generations ago, the unknown might have involved the outdoors or the wilderness.
