The main factor is the revelation of excessive personal information online by an individual which can be used and manipulated, thus escalating to the increment of cyberbullying. There is also a need for individuals to respect other people privacy and be mindful that their postings may reveal about other people. Another risk factor that should be prevented is sexting, commonly known as the sending of explicit photos or messages normally by a mobile device. Circulation of these images will have an embarrassing and devastating effect when cyberbullies used this as a “weapon” to intimidate an individual. As people are often connected and contactable nowadays, they may experience the greater intensity of cyberbullying, which are relentless in nature. The psychological effects of cyberbullying may result into stress, depression, suicidal ideation and anxiety that can incur permanent damage if prolonged. One such example was about a 13 year old Megan Meier, which ultimately ended up as a suicide in the year 2006. Apparently, this case is about her friend, “Josh Evans” who gave hateful words through “MySpace” that eventually drove Megan to suicide. Investigators discovered that “John Evans” was indeed a make-up fake profile, created by the parents of Megan’s former girlfriend that she initially had a fall out with. As there was no proper laws at that point of time, the Meiers did not file any lawsuit. In December 2007, the mother then set up a non-profit foundation Megan Meier Foundation to bring awareness, education and promote positive change to others with regards to the ongoing bullying and cyberbullying in their daily environment.
