This past Friday, I had the opportunity to see Dr. Rachel Whitcomb's performance in PNC Recital Hall, titled "Back on my Feet Again. " This was a country, blues, and bluegrass concert coming from a vocalist and professor with a classical learning background. It centered around a theme that although a knowledge of classical techniques is important for any singer, they should still try to incorporate their own unique musical techniques into their teaching or performance repertoire. The beginning of the concert featured a digital presentation that questioned what "appropriate" music should be considered and who has the authority to decide what should be performed by formal singers. The questions were all rhetorical and would later be answered by Dr. Whitcomb throughout her performance.…

This performance is from October in 2015. Personally I liked the piece, but it could use a little more help. While they have good points in the piece they also had some low points. The basses had a good deep and dark sound like you want for many of our male singers to achieve. Their vowels were outstanding just like they always are.…

The hostile staccato of the conductors’ demands cut through the pressure that was quite apparent in the Rice University concert hall. Sweating and focused, my orchestral troop fought through every movement of Tchaikovsky's romantic escapades and Mozart's baroque form of music. I treated my high school career as an unending overture full of experiences that created the composition of my life. From the presto of various HOSA competitions and the steady andante of missionary work, life has become an orchestra and I have found myself living through various “tempos and rhythms” that shape me to achieve the final movement- pediatrics.…

After Men’s Choir, Bel Cantos and their Choir Clinic, which I was a part of, got up and sang “Pink Panther” and “Loosin Yelav”. Following those songs, Bel Cantos sang “I Have a Voice”. Then Rocky Mountain got up and sang “Gloria” and then “A Musical” with the Bonnevaires. The final two songs were sung by Bonnevaires.…

Upon attending the International Chamber Music Festival Concert, a certain ecstatic vibe could be felt as the performers walked on stage with their musical instruments. The virtuoso’s performed in pieces that contained trios, duets, and quintets; showing the concentration they required when listening to each other. When working on Chamber Music, much of the melody jumps around from instrument to instrument, show casing various solos and much of the instruments having to coincide with each other to carefully listen for the melody. The first performance, was from Mosaics, by Eric Ewazen, only introducing the first movement: I. Barcarolle. The performers Dr. Susan Berdahl (flute), Dr. Xiaohu Zhou (bassoon), and Dr. James Moyer (marimba), all played outstandingly and show cased exactly how Chamber Music is meant to be played.…

Ever since I heard of this project I’ve wanted to learn more. I was first exposed to it in the summer of 2015 when Show Choir camp came around, and our choreographer Damon Brown told us about this project he’s in and what they do. The summer before my freshman year I knew I would be doing show choir, and I would go to the summer camp. What I didn’t know was that I would be inspired by our choreographer Damon.…

The choral concert was a very professional and great performance, and all performers did a great job at the performance. In addition, they are all students of SFSU. They performed different kind of song such as church song, funeral song, and poetic song, and each song has its special meaning. They also used different language to express the songs. Even though I could not understand the language of songs, I could feel the emotion of the songs through their radical rhythm and intonation.…

On Nov.4, I attended a concert from SJSU called “Listening Hour”, which is a casual-dressed concerts since most audience—students and professors from SJSU are not dressed. Basically It is a quite delightful concert in a relaxing and joyful phenomenon. As audience, I believe I’m a perceptive listener since I’m the combination of casual and critical listener. During yesterday’s concert, I made some comments on different performers(vocals) from perspectives of emotion, skills, and stage presence. Importantly, I will analyze this concert with my perceptive listener’s characteristics and music appreciation knowledge in detail.…

A Reflection on Symposium 2016 This response primarily rests on my view of music and how Dr. Ysaye’s presentation, Symposium 2016: “Our Songs Know Who We Are”, enlarged my experience of the sense of unity I receive in polyphonic music. A large part of my reflection involves my involvement with music in the Unitarian Church and back in Lesotho. First, I will introduce the readers to Alex Pollard, a choir member with cerebral palsy. [1] Second, I will present a Basotho women’s choir during a harvest season.…
