Did the Bank War cause the Panic of 1837? Richard Hofstadter from The American Political Tradition and the Men Who Made It believes President Andrew Jackson's refusal to recharter the Bank of the United States was politically popular but economically harmful to the long-term growth of the United States. Peter Tenim, from The Jacksonian Economy, believes international factors, such as changes in the monetary policies of the Bank of England, the supply of silver from Mexico, and the price of southern cotton, were far more important than Jackson's banking policies in determining fluctuations in the 1830s economy. The two intelligent men present their facts and arguments well and make it hard for the reader to mold their opinion for either side.…

Structural unemployment is actually very similar to frictional, but person is structurally unemployed when they’re laid off because of the changing (and re-“structuring”) industries. This could mean that maybe a certain skillset isn’t as needed as it was beforehand, and this happens often with the rapid progression of technology that we’ve been witnessing. Structural unemployment is also usually longer lasting than frictional, because people who are frictionally unemployed usually have an open position at the ready, or at least open positions near them. Structurally unemployed people are left jobless, and in the unemployment pool, for longer because of the fact that it is so hard to find a job in the area. Whether it be due to skill set or location.…

First, benefits are usually given out because the unemployed deserve them, which is by no means wrong, but it does not work in the long run. Unemployment benefits must be given out as a matter of need, or the program will become far too expensive. Secondly, the cost of supplying unemployment insurance, especially if it is given as a right, is too much for an economy to handle. Everyone would have to pay; therefore, prices increase, and the same issue arises. Those without a steady income are unable to purchase the necessities to live.…

The Homeless Epidemic Homelessness can be defined in many ways. For example, relating to a feeling of not having a home, but there is a much more relevant and understudied topic that we will be referring to. It both directly and indirectly affects everyone whether they’re conscious of that fact or not. The issue of homelessness is a sociological phenomenon that I feel is limited more so to the United States than anywhere else; which gives a sense of irony seeing as it is the, “Land of Opportunity.” The paradox of opportunity subsides when we realize that there are no opportunities to be had anymore.…
