In “Only Daughter” she writes, “Being only a daughter for my father meant my destiny would lead me to become someone’s wife. That’s what he believed.” Here, cultural values clash as Cisneros recounts the conflicts she has faced in her life due to different ideologies in within her household. Cisneros, like Tan, uses her writing to call out aspects of her culture that oppress, such as the patriarchal rule.
Through the inclusion of these topics in their writing, these authors criticize the negative effects oppressive cultural ideals can have. In doing so, they help their cultures adapt to modern values that better the lives of those who are part of them. In this sense, the society they are trying to better is not that of the white American, but that of their own cultures. Throughout their writing, Cisneros and Tan criticize society’s opposition of cultural differences by exploring the divisions these differences can create for characters with divided cultural identities. These divisions exist in many forms, and all are discussed by these authors. Sometimes it is the separation between minority Americans and the rest of America, or the chasm between generations in families, and other times it exists between those who hold opposing values due to their cultures. In Sandra Cisneros’s “The House on Mango Street,” Esperanza’s descriptions of imagined houses illustrate that home should provide a place of freedom. Freedom of privacy to explore who she is and freedom of mobility to move throughout the world as a young woman. Esperanza explains that her ideal home would, “…have a basement… and three washrooms so when we took a bath we wouldn’t have to tell everybody” (Cisneros 4). The basement in this moment represents a desire for excess space to feel free to move and explore who she is. Cultural conflicts happen just as frequently in the real world and in the world of literature. These conflicts reveal an individual’s identity, personality and character. Just as a photographer prepares his/her camera and scenery before a shoot, Rudolfo Anaya’s writing style takes place as a strategy that is analogous to how a photographer takes a picture because of how she diligently utilizes certain essential literary elements in his writing to craft about how an individual reacts when a cultural conflict comes into existence. Anaya’s writing reveals the significance of the cultural relationships between humans, not just in specific Hispanic cultures, but as humanity in general. Furthermore, a cultural conflict not only takes place externally…

In the three texts “Where Worlds Collide”, “Everyday use”, and House on Mango Street the reader gets to see how people live and perceive America from a different perspective rather than a white person’s. Usually one would be looking through a white person’s eyes because everyone seems to think that white people’s opinions are the only one’s in America that matter. Throughout these texts the reader gets to know what it’s like to see what America is like not through a rich and healthy white person’s eyes but through someone who actually has ethnic minority struggles they have to deal with on a daily basis. In the novel “The House on Mango Street”, written by Sandra Cisneros, there is a very generic type of writing structure associated with each of the chapters. One basic aspect of the writing structure that is represented throughout the novel is the lack of quotations. While some may consider this incorrect and abnormal, it makes the novel quite easy to interpret and understand. Since every part of the book involves sentences and dialogue without quotation, it is difficult to cite specific examples. As well as there being a structure that simplifies the story, there is a poetic tone to it as well.…

Throughout the existence of global civilizations and along the path of societal development, there has always been the subjugating presence of inequality in and among all nations and cultures. Among all histories of civilization and genres of life, there has almost always been an inequality involving the agency of the genders; it has been an inequality that led often perceived lesser binary, the female, to develop a lack of agency in many cultures, or has prohibited this potential. Although the flame of female agency can be easily ignited by very miniscule acts and even the most seemingly repressed women possess agency, there is still an impending need to encourage female agency in all areas of life for the repercussions are destructive to…

The House on Mango Street by Sandra Cisneros was about the dream house of a young girl of Spanish descent, and the several times her family moved to a place which didn’t suit their needs. The Lawsuit by Naguib Mahfouz was about the troubles faced by a boy and his family when his fifty five year old dad decided to marry a pretty, young girl and brought her along to live in the same house. The House on Mango Street dealt with small house problems of a big family that moved often due to less space and poverty, whereas, The Lawsuit involved family issues when a fifty five year old father decided to torn his family apart when he married a young girl and brought her home to a family of children and his first wife. Cisneros portrayed the girl, in The House on Mango Street, as a confused and hopeful person who was aware of the financial conditions of her family yet she believed that one day she would move to a “real house” with her family where they would have “real” stairs, basement and washrooms, and a big yard.…

Accordingly, she confines herself to the apartment of ‘the man.’ Over time, she begins to miss her homeland more and more and one day says to ‘the man’ that she is sad again.…
