Cultural Interview Reflection

I decided to attend the Jewish temple Shalom during Saturday morning service for my cultural field assignment. I chose this event because I feel a student’s religion is also important to understand just as much as their language. Understanding another religion other than a religion that I practice will help me connect with students of other faiths. I am not very familiar with the Jewish faith nor do I know a lot of people who practice Judaism. That is why I chose this cultural event to observe and witness. The temple that I visited is located in down town Colorado Springs near the US Olympic Training Facility. I contacted the temple prior to visiting to get permission to observe their service and customs. I was granted my request to observe …show more content…
I am myself not a very religious person. I do consider my self a Christian, but not a devolt Christian. I came in with an open mind and without bias. I truly wanted to observe and understand a Jewish service. I did not think it was hard to follow along. Majority of the Hebrew was translated. However, even after this service I do not remember a single word Hebrew that was spoken. It was a very hard language to follow and even harder to read. Reading from right to left in Hebrew did throw me for a loss. It was very hard for me to make that transition. In order to follow along with the service I mostly read from the English translation. From this experience I did learn that listening and observing is not the best way for me to learn another language. I found my self really not paying attention but was more occupied looking around Sanctuary and other people than actually paying attention to what was being said. With a limited religious background that I have, I did not see any major differences from a Jewish service compared to a Christian service. There was a lot more getting up and knelling than what I was used to from experiences in a Christian setting. I did choose attend the conservative service in order to see a more traditional side of the Jewish faith. I did not see anything that stood out to me that I could share. What I can share is that attending this service was interesting but not very informative. However this observation has peaked my interest to learn more and hopefully in time I can do

Spanish Mass at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church 1. What happened during the services? I arrived at the church a few minutes prior to the service and I was greatly surprised by how well attended the service was. There were dozens of families in a spectrum of Sunday best and work-stained denim jeans and nearly every person wore a yellow and white vest with a red cross embroidered on the lapel. At the entrance there was a small dipping well and although there was no water in it at the moment, (most likely due to the sizeable crowd) people still placed their fingers in the dry well and crossed themselves before entering the chapel and before sitting, they would cross themselves again.…

Visiting Sha’ ar Zahav was definitely like visiting a synagogue like no other. The first thing that you notice right through the door is that someone has been posted to specifically greet everyone who comes in and explain what type of synagogue they are. Out of all the synagogues, I felt the most welcomed in by Sha’ ar Zahav. Everything from how they pray to the way the torah is covered has something to say about their ideology. It is clear that they don’t follow Halakhah nearly as strictly as the previous Orthodox Synagogue.…

Unlike Catholic service where there would be the Mass and the canonical hours, the Protestants had just the Mass and an evening service and the sermons were done during those times. The Protestant service spoke in a mix of Latin and vernacular; the Catholic service spoke solely in Latin. Next, the Protestants encouraged the congregation to participate in the singing of hymns, not just a selected choir like in the Catholic service. In the Protestants’ service, the congregation sang in chorale style, which was a monophonic rhythmic melody or “religious folk song” that followed an AAB format, with a strophic text. The Protestants used secular music and changed it to be sacred, by changing the text, for their…

Introduction I originally was going to interview a girl from Singapore for this paper, but I had to go back home and I was not able to talk with her after all. So while I was back in my home town I interviewed a girl I went to school with, and for the sake of the paper I am going to refer to her as Sally. Before interviewing Sally I knew how our physical appearances differed, but I didn’t realize how culturally different we were. Understanding Others Sally is different from me in number of ways, but some of our differences are she is a mother, she refers to herself as a Christian, she still lives in the town she grew up in, and she has a job.…

Through creation of a POSTER/INSTRUCTIONAL VIDEO OF RECIPE, Katie Chambers and I plan to reflect on the Spanish language and presence of Hispanics in the US that have had existential impact on factors that compose American culture. First, my partner and I will interview a Latinx/Hispanic person within our community and will use elements from our interviewee's life story to inform our cultural artifact. We believe using a POSTER/VIDEO OF RECIPE is the best way to present the information we gain from our interview because it allows the audience to follow a visual representation while we explain how our interviewee has been impacted by cultural factors in the US. The previous course projects completed will serve to guide our questions during the interview session.…

The individual that I chose for my interview is a 37 year old male who was born and raised in Germany, but presently resides in northern Indiana. He relocated to the United States for work-related reasons. His name is Michael Drue and he is, at this time, married to my first cousin Krisha, a native English speaker, having been born in the United States. I chose Michael as the person of interest for my intercultural interview not only because he is speaks English as a second language, but also because of the point of view he was able to give me regarding the difficulties that language and cultural barriers may present in an interpersonal relationship. When I enquired at what age he was when he started to learn English as his second language,…

I started out by stating my name, that I am a Bachelor of Nursing Student and that the purpose of the interview is to learn more about the family and that everything discussed will be confidential. Mock Interview Reflection The mock interview was closely related to the topics covered in the readings and in class. Getting practice using the techniques we have been learning in real time, with a real person, made the content more concrete. I was conscious of employing solution focused techniques as much as possible in the short time we had to conduct the interview. While my performance produced mixed results, the practice was a good start to becoming an expert using the technique. Strengths and Effectiveness When reflecting on my performance, I was able to express to the client I was fully engaged in our conversation by intentionally implementing a variety of reflection strategies.…
