Transcultural nursing is an important component in modern nursing and especially in today's diverse society. Now-a-days, the healthcare system is challenging because of diverse patient populations, increased technological development and modification in healthcare policies. There is an essential requirement to develop cultural competence among nurses because they are to meet the needs of the diverse populations they serve. Cultural disparities can affect patient assessment, teaching and patient outcomes, as well as overall patient compliance. I try to adjust according to the patient’s needs and communicate according to their expectations. I always try to focus about my patient’s cultural preferences, including language, religion, belief and racial practice during my nursing practice. There is difficult situations appears when a patient does not understand what their health care provider is telling them and when the health care provider do not speak the client’s language. This is a frequent challenge at my work. We have dual handset phone and appropriate interpreter services for the second language. If a patient does not speak English, I do not automatically assume that the patient has difficulty speaking his/her native language. In my initial patient assessment, I try to find out what language they speak, their level of education and how they wished to be called. I always focus on individualized patient care and avoid generalization. Because in same culture there is a division and subcultures and they may have particular choice and specific prediction for them. I try to assess my patient’s special needs, about their culture, language, and preference of religion or food. When I am taking care of an Asian patient, I ask them if patient prefers home-cooked food. If so, I allow a family member to bring food from home. Galanti (2015) stated, “One of the reasons stereotyping is so inappropriate is that no one ever belongs to just one culture. We belong to numerous cultures, including those of ethnicity, religion, region of the country, generation, sex, occupation, education, and socioeconomic status” (p. 13). However, it may happen intermittently which should be avoided in our multicultural society. As for example, the patient’s from Middle Eastern may have low tolerance of pain and scream loudly and the Mexican American nurse stereotyping their attitude. However, as a health care professional, I try to be compassionate and avoid stereotyping behaviors, because these patient’s may be loud with their discomfort according to their cultural
